A mother by heart and an architect by profession, I am tabulating a few considerations for designing cheerful kids’ bedrooms, with ease and understanding.

Going down my memory lane, I remember enjoying rides on a green metal swing kept in our balcony. I remember a table having a royal blue mica with a dining table chair as my desk, to study on. Writing on the doors of our apartment with chalk, while talking to myself, owning a black stray cat as my own, putting up a tent with pillows and cushions for the wedding of my dolls….. I remember sharing space with my siblings.

Well, the priceless memories are countless and we all have our own share of cherished remembrances in our subconscious minds. These happy memories stay with us forever.

The surroundings and the belongings, we grow with, leave a lasting imprint on us. We narrate our childhood stories to our children. We wish to pass on the goodness of those growing-up stories. From our own experiences, we realize what we could not possess or accomplish and wish not to deprive our children of the same.

We were privileged and blessed and so are our children for getting the best from their parents. Unfortunately, many children have to struggle even for the basics. I just finished reading the book Refugee by Alan Gratz. it is a heartbreaking tale of three children, struggling for their existence. ( click here to read my review).

In an effort to ensure that our children carry sweet and healthy memories of their stay with us, we venture on a mission to design the best kids’ bedrooms for them. Surroundings help mould a child’s psychology. Shaping their spaces is like shaping their future and personality. An ill-equipped, deprived, unorganized, cramped space gives rise to a disturbed mind fighting for space. A well-thought-out space assists in the healthy upbringing and conditioning of the child.

The delightful experience of working for children is very satisfying and rewarding. Relatively undemanding they are quick to please. They are so enthused to watch their room being designed. I feel privileged and love the joyful journey of designing rooms for kids.

The challenges are of a different kind here. Children grow really fast and so do their fast-changing needs. It might not be as simple as it looks. We want to design each detail with utmost care and attention for these small wonders.

Let the child participate in the design process.

Children love to participate in whatever is happening around them. Sometimes we just don’t care to pay attention to what they have to say. They can surprise us with their insightful suggestions. Kids also have very strong favorites. Find out their favorite colors and build a sensible palette around them.

They feel very responsible in taking decisions and learn to live with them. The importance bestowed on them fills them with confidence. So it is a good idea to involve the kid in the informed decision-making process.

List out the functional needs of the child in accordance with the age. Then clearly demarcate each activity within the space. A well set out play area, hobby corner, homework station, sleeping, lounging area, etc encourage the child to focus and engage better. Otherwise, the confused minds of little ones end up doing homework on a bed or eating on a bed.

Defined zoning helps them to engage in each activity without getting distracted.

Young minds get bored so easily. Statements like `what to do?’, or `I have nothing to do now’ are frequent. A space that keeps them engaged and busy is ideal. Easy to access, visually available objects keep them busy. They are encouraged to use their belongings if they are visible and accessible to them. A world map on one of the walls for example would keep the kid engaged and dream big.

For the inevitable clutter provide for sufficient and easy to access storage. Books, stationary, notebooks, clothes, socks, accessories, stuffed toys, toys, board games huff.. the list is endless. There is a need to clearly mark out storage, which may be labeled, to keep the confusion at bay. Clearly, the need for storage is huge here. Children tend to accumulate so much in a short period of time.

kid's storage

Drawers, cabinets, bookshelves, wardrobes, cubbyholes we need to consider all possibilities. But teach them to get rid of the clutter regularly.

These restless, inquisitive and naughty creatures can be very unpredictable. Their agile and overactive bodies can land them in trouble. Whatever is being designed must ensure safety. Covers for electrical outlets, hidden cables, rounded and soft edges, non-slippery surfaces, accessible shelving, window security are a few points to consider.

Go for furniture that is easy to move around and is light and airy in feel. Heavy furniture pieces confirming a particular style add to the already stuffy nature of the room. Multipurpose furniture serves well here. Furniture pieces that have the right dimensions to suit the child. Mix up small and large-scale pieces for longevity. If we select everything small scale we might need to change very soon.

A desk and chair that ergonomically suit the child is a must. Chairs with back support, adjustable height, armrest, footrest all are essential for the right posture. Sofa, bed, etc. are preferred in adult size. Arranging furniture along the periphery creates a play area in the middle.

We need to literally look at our space from their eyes. Bend down to their height and perceive the space from there. How do you find a shelf high up beyond your reach or an art piece you can not even see and comprehend. Consider the ergonomics for your child.

Designing a room around favorite cartoon characters or princesses and fairylands are all bygone now. Children grow at the speed of light. So do their tastes and preferences. Designing the rooms with beds in the form of a car or a train engine is all very innovative but is a huge waste at the same time. Kids outgrow this ultra kiddish stuff way too fast. Instead of burning a hole in your pocket with themed investment pieces, you can work on a theme through swappable and replaceable items like bedsheets, cushions, lamps, accessories, etc.

A kid’s room is a place where you can have a lot of fun designing. You get the opportunity to incorporate those bold and whimsical patterns and colors. The choice of colors depends on many factors one of the important ones being the age of the kid. For a nursery soothing, light pastels work well. In a toddler’s room bright, saturated colors impart the zeal. And for teens and pre-teens, a more mature palette is recommended.

kids' bedroom

A bold wallpaper with a geometrical pattern or floral and animal prints and motifs is befitting. You could pick a focal wall or back of a bookshelf to display wallpaper. A patterned headboard, cushions, quilts, rugs are other places to play with patterns.

Kids need sufficient light to perform various activities efficiently. Proper ambient, task and accent lighting ensure that the kid stays alert and active and is able to focus better. Functions like reading, homework, painting, drawing, crafts, etc need a prolonged use of eyes and ample light is a must.

poster bed

A bedroom that is connected to nature is healthy and vibrant for the kid. Try to choose a bedroom location that is connected to some open space – a balcony, a courtyard, or even a window with a view. A window seat is a nice place to read a book.

Apart from being functionally efficient ensure that the room is cozy and warm for the child. Children love to cuddle in corners with cushions, stuff toys, etc. A spongy reading chair or sofa with lots of cushions, rugs on the hard floor, bean bags, drapes, and blinds soften the space. A reading corner next to a window is a nice idea to encourage a child to read.

Personalize the space. Children naturally have a sense of ownership. They love to own and claim things. They love to write their names on objects. Personal pieces like art, accessories give them a sense of belonging and adds warmth to the bedroom.

fun and funky elements

Keep the room in good humor and add some funky elements for the kids to enjoy. A small tent house, tepee in a corner, a whimsical painting, fun quotations, help add a touch of fancy to the room that kids enjoy. A canopy bed or poster bed with sheer curtains or a bunk bed in the shape of a house, fill the room with a dreamy air.

Children love to have a hideaway corner where they can dream and make plans and talk to themselves.

Design a space that evolves with the growing child. The room should have the flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the child. We should be able to swap things without touching on the essence of the space for a substantial period.

For a child his/her room is like a home within the home. It has to be self-sufficient and private for the child to enjoy the stay. Kids have a strong sense of territory. They love to own a part of the land and entertain their friends there. We need to respect their privacy and independence. A constant observation kinda scenario can hamper a child’s growth and development. Especially teenagers need that me time to recharge themselves.

The intention in designing a kid’s bedroom is to create a wholesome, reassuring, comfortable, and pleasant space. Even if it is not very luxurious the soulful sectors drive the child to spend some memorable moments. Where they share a hearty laugh with friends, a warm hug with their parents, a fight with their siblings…

For these twinkle-eyed cute little ones, we need to design from our hearts. In fact, the whole house has to be designed in a child-friendly manner. We hope that the spaces designed for them help them dream big, boost their confidence for them to have an enjoyable stay. It is worthwhile to realize that one day these special people will move on in the journey of their life with some happy moments to cherish for a lifetime.

Till next time…..

Clutter like an infectious disease keeps growing in our abodes, unnoticed, neglected and overlooked by us. Take up the unnerving task of clearing the clutter for the minimalist home for your well being.

Scrolling down a few videos, once I stumbled upon one of a bright and young girl dressed up in all her glory. But I was bewildered to discover that she was about to renounce the material world and embrace monkhood. While the tremendous resolve and courage of her decision deserved acknowledgment but it immersed me into sorrow.

My thoughts were clouded more by shades of sympathy than appreciation. Well letting go to such an extreme was inconceivable for me personally.

After a few months, we had to move to our new house that required a rigorous culling of our possession of years. We were almost on an archeological mission, unearthing a forgotten world, hidden in the closets, under a layer of dust. So much accumulated stuff to deal with!

Suddenly I was reminded of that young girl who had given up on a gleaming life to follow her passion. Here I was in the middle of the unnecessary stuff that was occupying so much space in the house.

Well, I am by no means saying that I am planning for monkhood! But I could sense the paradoxical situation. And that was the awakening call for me, the epiphany.

The realization of time to time decluttering dawned over me. We keep accumulating and shoving it into our closets in anticipation of using it someday. And that someday never arrives.

how to handle clutter ?

Marie Kondo is a well-known decluttering crusader who has written a popular book – The life-changing magic of tidying up. She sets out the famous KonMari principles for decluttering in her book. Recently I read a book on decluttering – The minimalist home by Joshua Becker. There is a lot of literature available on the subject.

Various methods are advocated by various people, to face the clutter at our home. But I believe there is no one-size-fits-all solution for the problem.

my approach for clutter

A few points that I personally relate to regarding the stuff monster at our homes are listed below:

buy thoughtfully

  • Buy new items or products thoughtfully. Think before buying anything new. You are committing a space for that item in your house, no matter how small.

Personally, I am not an impulsive buyer and do not fall for the marketing gimmicks easily. But I have seen people close to me buying out of habit or just to keep boredom at bay. It is kind of therapeutic for them. What you buy comes home and disappears to occupy corners of your home. Soon resulting in clutter, without your realization.

keep surfaces free

  • Keep the flat surfaces of furniture like table tops, kitchen counter tops, shelves etc. as clear as possible.

A simple act of clearing the tabletops of unnecessary stuff has a hugely positive psychological effect on me. People are generally in a habit of putting everything on the flat tops just for convenience. Keys, notebooks, shopping bags, newspapers, etc. Keep it where it belongs and free the surfaces.

clutter free space

minimize storage space

  • Do not create storage spaces where they do not exist like under the bed, over the doors. The more you create more you accumulate.

Difficult to access hidden storage spaces are like magnets that attract all unwanted objects. We never access them and the stuff appears as a surprise find whenever we happen to open such spaces. it is very infectious to fill such storages up for later. Out of sight means out of our minds.

be decisive

  • Make piles of clutter into categories like throw, keep, donate and take action decisively.

Let go of your stuff after due consideration. Get rid of donation bags fast. Do not let them hang around for long. I have experienced such bags hanging around in our car hoods, spare rooms for months. Donate to whatever place is convenient for you. Uday foundation is one such place where you can donate.

digitize

  • Buy and go digital wherever possible. Digitization can help us reduce the visual clutter to a large extend.

We can easily scan documents, photographs, crafts made by kids, etc. Wherever possible we should try to store data on computers with backup. But be wary of the digital clutter you might end up with. Be organized with your digital storage well.

simplify your life

  • Wherever possible use simple tools and devices. Do not clutter your spaces with specialized gadgets and equipment.

I remember buying a pineapple peeler for my kitchen. But found using it so cumbersome that doing the job with a simple knife was much quicker and easier. Simplify your choices wherever you can.

remove duplicates

  • Remove duplicates. Shoes, clothes, utensils, stationery, there can be duplicates in all realms, in all probability. The reason is simple- just in case.

We keep on stocking on duplicates in the apprehension of needing the other in case we lose the first. But we don’t realize the amount of burden we are carrying in the name of the backup. The clutter is far more detrimental to our well-being compared to a little inconvenience.

organized clothes

be practical

  • Don’t carry the emotional baggage along. Sometimes we carry gifts, inherited things, memoirs, etc just because we feel obligated to.

Nobody gives us a gift to burden us. No dear one who has left this world wants us to keep their stuff as an obligation. There are better ways of remembering people whom we have lost. If something evokes sadness or a feeling of regret it is all the more imperative to get rid of it.

get rid of t.v.

  • I have always felt very strongly against having a tv in the bedroom. We must refrain from installing one in our or kids’ bedroom too.

Bedroom is a place to relax and unwind after the grind of the day. T.v has the potential to clutter not just physical space but also mental space. I always advocate against a t.v. in the bedroom. A t.v. requires a credenza and then you start eating in front of t.v. and slowly it only escalates from there.

organize

  • Once you have done the daunting job of decluttering don’t forget to organize. Otherwise, it would be a wasteful exercise.

Organize according to color, category, types of item. Clothes, books, and utensils, or anything else should be sorted and stored in an organized manner for easy and quick accessibility.

organize utensils

word of caution

Few points where you need to exercise caution:

  • Do not start with any feeling of guilt or regret. If we start regretting over having so much or the cost of items involved then the momentum breaks. You might end up feeling depressed and doing nothing to solve the problem.
  • Be very careful when dealing with children and there stuff. Remember our aim is to reduce clutter and in no way hamper there growth or development. Explain the benefits and go ahead with their consent only. We don’t want to take the joy out of their childhood.
  • Consider the fact that every person has a different clutter toleration threshold. I have seen some people enjoy being in a messy, chaotic place. Their brain cells work better if surrounded by clutter. Do not force your concepts and give people time.
  • Do not be ruthless or impulsive while throwing stuff. You might end up throwing an important document or an important part of some equipment.
  • Keep the balance between minimalism and maximalism. We do not want to end up with a hotel room with bare essentials. After all it is our personal belongings that adds warmth to our house.
  • Be sensitive when dealing with old people. I remember visiting an old aunt and finding myself in the unbearable clutter, every time I went there. But what we perceive as clutter is the only source of joy for an old person, maybe.
clutter

In India, Diwali is the festival when people clear up their houses of all the clutter in a belief that Goddess Lakshmi visits only those houses that are clean. But ironically we end up buying and getting a lot of stuff home to celebrate Diwali.

benefits of removing clutter

Decluttering opens up spaces and hence promotes peace and calm. Less stuff means more meaningful belongings that gain attention and significance in our lives.

Less dust accumulating on objects and less time and resources going into maintenance and cleaning. Easy flow of positive energy. Less distraction with fewer but quality stuff. The benefits of minimizing are manifold and far-reaching.

At a more significant level, the act of letting go detaches us from our material possessions. In the process, we feel liberated and are driven to donate and help others. We get free of a consumeristic attitude that only driven by greed and hoarding. When we are not controlled by our stuff rather we control it.

I have shifted to my new home after letting go of so much of my stuff. Thanks to the lockdown we have not indulged in any shopping spree till now. And I am enjoying the relatively free space thoroughly.

Hope you got inspired to take up some simplifying of your own homes! If yes do share with others.

Happy decluttering!

Till next time…..

Art is a relatively easy, not necessarily inexpensive, way to infuse life on the blank walls of your homes. A medium through which any space expresses itself. It is an investment that goes a long way and fuels your pride by virtue of being a prized possession.

Whether you inherit a piece of art or pick it while on a trip or purchase it from a store or online, it is worth displaying it at your abode, to impart a collected look.

Art is something very personal, reflecting on your tastes and personality. Something that you really love and admire. An art piece lends color, texture, and pattern, all at once, to space. It inspires and lifts our spirits.

Photo by Laura Chouette on Unsplash

Choose the style that suits your space and personality. Abstract, modern, contemporary, traditional, boho, pop art, are a few styles that you can pick from.

Select a piece that either complements the style of your space or contrasts with it. Sometimes contrast imparts that much-needed balance and keeps a space from looking too embellished or otherwise.

It is not just about purchasing and possessing art but it is also about displaying it strategically in order to enhance its beauty.

LEAN art AGAINST A WALL

Want to know the easiest way to display art? Well, just lean it against a wall. No drilling of holes in the walls, no damaging of your favorite wall finish. It is super easy, super convenient, and super flexible.

Swap art as and when you wish to update the collection. The whole look is so casual and unassuming.

Just layer the pieces on a shelf and also include a few objects like sculptural artifacts and books, lamps, plants, etc to get a perfect vignette.

Or lean your statement art piece against a wall on floor itself!!

Or use that credenza as a base to layer in your favorite art pieces….

gallery wall

One of my personal favorites, this is such a creative way to animate the vast expanse of an empty wall. It is an art in itself to solve the jigsaw puzzle of displaying various art pieces in a pleasing, balanced, and cohesive format.

Depending on your personal preferences and dictates of interior styling you can choose a layout that best suits the art and space.

Choose a structured, grid layout for a formal look and feel. As a thumb rule, a regular grid layout works well with cohesive artwork that is in series, smaller in size and has a common subject and color.

E.g. family photographs, sketches, theme-based pictures, etc. Frames that are similar in size and color suit this format. Just make sure that a uniform gap is maintained between the pieces.

For a casual and relaxed vibe, go for a more organic layout. Here we can create a cluster with a variety of artwork. The configuration is freer in nature.

But it is preferable to adhere to a theme, color palette, and style, with frames of uniform thickness for a controlled and sorted look. Frames could be of the same or varied finishes.

organic gallery wall

Or create a dramatic, salon-style gallery wall that is completely assorted and collected. An eclectic mix of a variety of everything and anything that you possess. Keep on adding to this random collection to let it grow.

A useful tip is to start from the center with the largest piece and keep on assembling smaller pieces outwards. The intention is to add visual weight at the center in terms of size and/or color.

solo hero

If you don’t aspire to handle multiple pieces, go for a single statement piece. The most obvious locations for such a piece would be behind a sofa, over a bed, or credenza.

Don’t shy from splurging on this piece, if your budget permits. Make it the hero and place it as the focal point of your space. Hang at 6″-12″ above furniture piece. Get inspired and draw out a color palette from it for the interiors.

Just make sure that the width of your art object is not more than 2/3rd of the furniture piece so that it looks balanced and connected to the whole composition. Also, keep the center of the art at eye level i.e. around 60″ from floor level.

coordinate art with architecture

Paintings draw our eyes and hence add movement in space. Any architectural feature in a space can either be accentuated or camouflaged by placing paintings strategically.

The placement of paintings should be a well-thought-out process.

In the picture below, It is difficult to differentiate the window, at the bed back, from the bedside paintings in the landscape theme. Without these paintings, the window would have appeared very bare and diminutive.

In the image below, the two complementary paintings draw our eyes and help establish a visual connection and flow between the the two spaces.

See how beautifully the picture is framed by the arched feature, enhancing the painting and in turn enhancing itself.

place it off-center

The human mind, by instinct, likes symmetry for the balance it generates. A very obvious approach is to place the painting in the center of the wall, over a sofa, bed, etc.

But to give it a more distinctive look, place the painting/s off-center. Balance with plants, light fixtures, etc.

out of box locations

Think of unexpected places to hang the art. Art is such an easy way to brighten up any drab space. It could be your kitchen, bathroom, balcony, a book shelf or a niche.

What about one in the bathroom to elevate your spirits early in the morning…

choose a background

Art pieces can be taken to another level by displaying them on a worthy background. It could be wallpaper, exposed brick walls, concrete finish, texture paint, dark paint, and so on. It is a win-win situation as both help enhance each other.

Choose a painting that stands out on the background. To keep the focus on the painting go for an ornate frame. Or you could also go for a wide mat to keep it from merging with the background.

linear display

Displaying a series of paintings in a single line creates rythm and balance. It enhances the horizontality of an element in the space. It could be a furniture piece or an architectural element.

pair, triplet or quadraplet

It is a popular trend to display paintings in groups of 2, 3, or even 4 such that they are part of the same painting or are complementary to each other.

You could also go vertical…..

art corner

Create a cozy reading corner and enhance its appeal with art. Empty corners are perfect spots to exhibit art pieces. Add a floor lamp, a few plants, etc., and just curl on the chair with a cup of coffee and your favorite book!

A wrap around gallery wall is another great idea to enliven a dead corner.

Choosing the right piece of art and displaying it appropriately are equally important. Make art a part of your home interiors.

A home without any art is like pasta without sauce. It lacks the soul. It lacks the warmth and it lacks that personal touch that makes a house into a home.

Every art piece has a story of its own. Embellish the walls of your house with your favorite paintings for an artistic appeal.

Happy Decorating!

A sofa is more like a family member for most of us. An essential piece in our living, its serviceability is hard to ignore and undermine. It is our companion in those formal and involved conversations with our guests, over a cup of coffee. The couch for us to relax and enjoy popcorns with our favorite tv show, the functional versatility of a sofa is unquestionable.

A sofa is the major component of the furniture layout as far as any interior space is concerned. It is the focal point around which other pieces revolve and get anchored. It is that investment piece that usually stays in a household for about 8-10 years. Therefore It is important to consider a few points before purchasing a sofa. Very briefly, a few primary considerations are:

  • Scale – Always consider the size of your room before deciding on the sofa. I suggest if possible make a layout after taking measurements of your space. The size of the sofa should be of the right scale in relation to the room. Wouldn’t it be disappointing to end up with a huge and bulky sofa in a small space or a puny and slender sofa in an expansive space?
  • Function – The choice of your sofa would considerably depend on the function it has to serve. Do you want it to be part of a formal living room for guests’ entertainment or you intend to curl on it with your pet? Or is it to be placed in your casual living area where your kids spend most of their time?
  • Style – Most important consideration from the interior design point of view. The sofa style must be in sync with the design vocabulary of any space. Once you get an understanding of all the available style options, you can choose your sofa like a pro.

Sofa style is what I am going to explain in this blog. Here I give the 11 most popular sofa styles that you need to consider before purchasing a sofa:

1. chesterfield sofa

All dressed up, the timeless chesterfield is one of my personal favorites. It can be draped in leather or fabric with a tufted back and sometimes the seat is tufted too. Nailheads detailing adds to the rugged look. The arms roll outwards and are of the same height as the back.

Chesterfield is a statement piece, an absolute attention grabber. With a presence of its own, it works well in both traditional and contemporary styles. Break the monotony of a stark, contemporary space with this timeless piece. It is traditional and yet sophisticated and updated in its looks. Its versatility holds good in a formal as well as a casual setup.

Imagine a traditional English-style library, with rich mahogany paneling and bookshelves furnished with this sophisticated, gentlemanly piece! What about enhancing the formal atmosphere, somewhere in a lawyer’s office, with law books stacked in the backdrop. A chesterfield also works excellently in any space that needs masculine vibes. I can visualize a man’s cave with a leather chesterfield.

2. tuxedo sofa

Next on the list is Tuxedo – a very clean and contemporary looking sofa. Its arms and back of the same height just as in a chesterfield sofa. The rectilinear piece of furniture is less embellished though. You would admire its neat straight lines, boxed form, and unassuming presence.

This fine and subtle piece of furniture works well in a contemporary setup. A good option for offices and lounges where a clean, uncluttered look is to be embraced. Or place it next to a statement piece in a supportive role.

The version of Tuxedo with quilted back and sides can hold its own though and is more suitable for the transitional style of interiors. Nailhead trim adds to the detailing.

3. lawson sofa

A very functional and conventional-looking sofa. I think if we ask a child to draw a sofa, this is what he or she would draw. A picture that comes to our mind naturally on thinking about a sofa. Arms, rolled or straight, lower than the back provide armrests. The back cushions are loose and separate impart a cozy and comfortable vibe to it. Low arms are also suitable for napping and relaxing.

I would recommend this sofa for casual, lounging spaces. This versatile classic sofa suits traditional, transitional and contemporary styles. Drape in linen fabric and add some skirting to place it in country or cottage style interiors. Straight and clean lines provide an overall cool and neat look whereas a few details like rolled arms, tufted back cushions, and intricate legs or skirting can easily help it add some charm to a transitional space.

4. English roll arm sofa

This classic English-style sofa has very low and recessed rolled arms. The sofa adds a warm, relaxed, and comfortable feel to the space. It generally has no skirt and is on legs with casters. it is also known as the Bridgewater sofa.

A classic piece suitable for traditional European style interiors. Works well in the casual, relaxed interior spaces. Imagine one in a farmhouse or country-style interiors. Wouldn’t it look fabulous with some pendant basket lights in a casual living space?

5. camelback sofa

Definitely, on my favorites list, this fine piece of furniture adds a smooth curvaceous feel to space. This sofa has raised, arched back in the center, like the hump of a camel. Hence the name – Camelback. A traditionally styled sofa has arms that roll outwards and has an exposed, wooden base.

Although this elegant design is more suitable for a traditional setting, however depending on its styling, it can also work beautifully in a transitional space. A camel back sofa adds softness to the sharp angular spaces. A good choice to break the straight, rectilinear lines. Why I like it is because of its slim, feminine appeal. A great choice for a girl’s paradise. Imagine this curvaceous, delicate piece of furniture draped in rich floral fabric with shear curtains flowing in the backdrop…

6. mid-century modern sofa

Much in trend these days is the mid-century modern furniture. Internet is flooded with images of this style. The term mid-century modern refers to the iconic furniture designs of the 1940s to 1970s, by the legends like Charles Eames, Florence Knoll, Le Corbusier, etc. This style is characterized by clean forms, straight lines, and nature-inspired colors. The wooden legs are square or tapering in shape. These comfortable-looking sofas come in a wide range of designs.

These sofas are ideal for small spaces in apartments where minimal detailing is preferred. Basic forms keep a space from being cluttered and also add a modern, urban vibe that is trending these days. The minimalist designs and retro details suit Scandinavian and modern-styled spaces.

8. sectional sofa

Sectional refers to a set of modular pieces that can be assembled in various forms depending on the space. The most common being L-shape, U-shape, J-shape. They definitely offer the convenience and flexibility of being moved around to suit our requirements.

Sectionals are very useful in large open-plan spaces where they help divide the space automatically without cutting on the visual expanse of the space. The in-built corner which can be used as a corner table helps maintain a clean look. A good choice for relaxed, lounge look. Sectionals do appear to take a lot of space. They always look very contemporary and streamlined though. The L-shape is very useful to fill up the corners. I have seen people who just love them and also people who just hate them. There is no in-between usually.

9. settee

A settee is the pared-down version of a sofa. Its purpose is to provide very basic and upright seating which is not necessarily comfortable. In areas where we need not sit for long hours like a doctor’s clinic or areas which are not primarily sitting areas like a bedroom, a settee serves well. Also in areas like an entrance foyer, a settee adds aesthetic value to the whole composition.

There can be a settee to suit every style. A contemporary bench-like settee to a french style slender sofa-like settee and so on. Suitable for entrance areas, waiting areas, bedrooms etc.

10. cabriole sofa

This classic sofa has a smooth curvaceous back that continues and merges with the arms that are slightly lower in height and are curving inwards. There are no back cushions. The style of this sofa is characteristic of the Queen Anne style of furniture. The serpentine wooden frame may be carved or not. Cabriole popularly refers to a style of legs in furniture. We generally see its more contemporary avatar as a fully upholstered sofa in a similar profile.

This style gives a very smooth, unobtrusive, and elegant feel as it doesn’t have sharp corners and edges. It is a good option as a complementary sofa. Depending on its styling it can be suitable for a contemporary or a traditional setup. I can imagine it sitting pretty in a French living room with a weathered patina wooden frame. This seamless design is suitable for small areas as it generates a very compact and retreating feel.

11. futon sofa

A futon is a more contemporary take on sofa cum bed idea. The back of this furniture piece snaps open and is foldable. Once opened it can be used as a flatbed. The Japanese word for a traditional bed is a futon. A minimalist, very utilitarian piece of furniture.

This sleek sleeper sofa is good for rental spaces and bachelor accommodation. Easy to move around and very flexible in usage.

11. chaise

A chaise is like a long ottoman or bench with low, contoured, cut in the back, with single or two arms. It could be such that it is used from both sides. Its objective is more of aesthetics and some additional seating without adding much visual weight.

In living rooms as dividers between two seating areas or in front of windows to get an unobtrusive view. Again there are various styles to choose from.

Although there are no rules in interiors and if there are, they are meant to be broken. The whole purpose of knowing these sofa styles is to get your basics right so that you can start from somewhere. Today we have so many sofa designs available in the market. Most of the sofas are derived from these styles or are a hybrid of these styles. Once you are aware of these it would be much easier to select a sofa that suits the styles of your space. Today I am sharing my formula to mix fabric patterns in interior spaces. Follow these tips to achieve the best results.

Have you ever noticed a small child watching carefully the patterns of a bedspread? How he or she is busy analyzing and counting those figures! That is exactly what patterns do to our brains. They have the power to keep us engaged. It is just that as a child we find the beauty of patterns in things as small as a bedspread and when we grow up our horizon increases. But the underlying fact is that patterns invoke that interest in any space.

Now while doing your living room you are aiming for that perfect pattern mix for your rugs, drapery, wallpaper, upholstery, throw pillows… But once you land in a fabric shop all your ideas and inspirations go for a toss! You have so many options that leave you more confused and overwhelmed than sorted. Don’t you feel like Alice in the wonderland?

But don’t worry, I am going to outline a few guidelines which will make your process a lot easier. Though I would admit that even as a professional, sometimes it takes a lot of trials to achieve that perfect mix. But with experience, I have learned to nail the technique of pattern mixing. So let’s get started!

1. Mix fabric patterns in odd numbers

Somehow, odd numbers of patterns always work well in a scheme. They appear more organic and inevitable than curated. I generally stick to three patterns but depending on the space you can go up to five patterns in a mix.

2. Start with a primary, master pattern

Select that one pattern you like the most as per the style and look you are aiming for. Preferably choose a pattern with a lot of colors in it so that we can pull out those colors for the rest of our scheme. We can now draw inspiration from our master pattern and build a color palette for our interiors.

Here I am taking a random floral pattern to start with to explain the process. It has enough colors in it to support our scheme. I like its organic feel against a muted pinkish background.

Start with master pattern to mix patterns

3.Layer in secondary patterns in different styles

Now let us select the secondary patterns for this scheme. They do not have to be matching with the floral pattern in terms of style. Rather than being matchy, they should complement or contrast the florals to deliver a coordinated pattern scheme. We must ensure variety in our scheme.

But mix patterns within the chosen color palette for harmony. E.g. here I have chosen a striped pattern which provides a nice offset to the busy and organic floral pattern above. It generates a cleaner and more organized vibe.

secondary pattern in mix
secondary pattern

Let us select the third pattern, which pulls out some other color from the palette and provides contrast at the same time. I have selected a geometrical pattern as shown below. It has a nice mix of colors from our palette.

secondary pattern in mix
secondary pattern

All the patterns are quite distinctive from one another. But being from the same color palette they tie well together. The patterns also have enough contrast to impart visual interest.

Are you enjoying? Keep reading….

4. Mix patterns of varying scales

Did you notice the scale of the three patterns? The primary pattern is a fairly large-scale pattern whereas the third pattern is small scale. I would say the striped pattern is in the medium scale category. So basically always mix patterns of varying scales. This gives our eyes enough variation to travel around the space. Also, the patterns do not clash with each other.

5. Add neutrals and solids

To create a more cohesive look we can now introduce a solid or a neutral pattern e.g. animal prints. Here I am introducing a textured solid as shown below. I have pulled out a less obvious color from the master floral pattern for this.

neutral solid pattern
solid

Are you excited to see how the patterns look together? This is how all the patterns look together:

mix patterns

6. Follow the 60 : 30: 10 rule and spread the patterns throughout the space

Spread the patterns throughout the space in a way that one of the patterns is roughly 60 % of the total composition and the other two are about 30 % and 10 % respectively. Now it is always a good idea to keep the medium-scale patterns as the main fabric i.e. in the largest proportion. Large-scale and small-scale patterns if used extensively can be a bit too much for the eyes to handle.

7. Few additional tips to mix patterns

Some additional tips which will enhance the patterns scheme include:

  • Vary the backgrounds of different patterns in a way that gives a nice contrast to lift the scheme.
  • Run the patterns in different directions.
  • Keep the intensity of colors of different patterns the same.
  • Introduce textures to enhance the look and give a tactile appeal.
  • Co-ordinate the paint colors with pattern colors. Learn more about paint colors here.

8. Conclusion

Though these rules are there in our subconscious mind but ultimately one needs to follow one’s gut. Always collect swatches of the chosen fabrics and keep them all together to take a final decision.

I hope you enjoyed selecting patterns with me and this blog makes the process easier and more enjoyable for you! And selecting patterns no longer feels like solving a big crossword puzzle to you.

Home automation

Wouldn’t you love to wake up with the drapes opening automatically in the morning? Sunlight filtering in, right up on your face, rather than with the monotonous beep of your alarm? As the drapes open, a pre-programmed soothing morning hymn starts playing in the background!

By the time you get up, hot water is ready for bathing at your desired temperature. As you get ready after your bath, the coffee machine dispenses your favorite cup of cappuccino.

Now imagine coming back from the office dead tired. Wouldn’t you love that the main gate opens automatically for your car to drive in, right up to your main door? As your gate opens, the lawn lights are turned on automatically at pre-set luminosity.

The AC switches on automatically in your living room at your desired temperature. Lights get turned on with just the right amount of dimming. Sounds too good to be true.  Isn’t it? But this is just a glimpse of what smart homes are capable of doing. The possibilities are endless.

A lot of connotations are associated with the word smart homes. When we hear words like automation or smart, our mind thinks about a myriad of things associated with them. However, we are not clear about what exactly a smart home is. In this fast-paced, technologically advancing world what all it can achieve for us.

This write up is an attempt to give a bird’s eye view of the subject and dispel a few doubts.

smart home automation

In simple terms, home automation means that a house is connected with smart devices which enables us to control the household gadgets remotely. It connects your home appliances, home surveillance systems, lighting, entertainment gadgets via the internet.

It lets you operate, manage, and control them remotely with various means like voice commands, mobile phones, or touch screens.

alexa

The world is moving to smart homes rapidly. Once, considered a luxury, they are now a lot more affordable and easier to use and are penetrating urban middle-class homes rapidly. A smart home offers the convenience, safety, customization, and integration of gadgets in one go or phases as per the budget, preferences, and needs.

home automation lights

There are two ways you can go about automation :

Automation from scratch

The first and the easier method is hardwiring your electrical points in your home at the time of construction and terminating them at a single point where the controller or hub is kept. A professional can plan out the automation wiring as per your requirements and guide your electrical contractor about the wiring requirements.

This system works better and is preferred over retrofitting as the devices are communicating with each other via physical wiring rather than entirely depending on the strength of the Wi-Fi signal.

home automation

Automation afterward

However, if your house is already constructed and you do not want major changes in electrical works, then the option is there to retrofit your home to make it a smart home. You do not need to change your switch modules as the new switches will fit in the existing switchboard panel without having to change your existing wiring.

It can be controlled either by switches or by smartphones. The command given by any device reflects in all the connected smart devices.

You can go in phases. The advantage of retrofitting is that you can start with one room and add rooms later as and when you feel like. The entire automation system can be accessed by multiple devices and from multiple locations. So, the entire family can control it from their devices from any location.

Why would you love a Smart home with automation?

Safety and security

camera, machine, street light, lighting, surveillance, product, safety, light fixture, monitoring, high technologies, the police, the investigation, the inquest, proof of tangible fixed, recording of the monitoring, the security service, smart homes, camera and blue sky, video registration, external cameras

One major advantage of a smart home is safety and security. When you have the option of seeing the live feed via security camera on to your smart device or mobile phone, irrespective of whichever part of the world you are in, it gives you a sense of security which is unmatched. You feel that you are in control.

automation door locking

Motion sensors detect any unwanted intrusions. A blaring alarm alerts the neighbors. Remote monitoring will alert you immediately if any suspicious movement is noted around the house. You can mitigate the risk of break-ins substantially. The smart homes call up the cops on their own in case of intrusions and alert the neighbors as well.

home security

Smart lighting

smart lighting

Another major advantage is smart lighting. Smart lighting helps conserves energy. It saves costs in the long run. Most of the pre-sets work at 70% luminosity. The auto-off feature helps in conserving energy. The major component of smart homes is lighting. Not only is it very convenient, but is a lot more energy-efficient solution.

Smart lighting means that it can turn off/on based on your movement in the house thus saving energy by automatically turning off the lights in the areas which are not in use. You can use voice commands through Google Home, Alexa to dim the lights, turn an individual light off, or on.

You can have a preset for mood lighting. The possibilities of scene creations through lighting are endless. Simple voice commands through Alexa can turn on or turn off the lights or have the desired color as per mood.

alexa automation lighting

Convenience

Convenience is one of the major aspects as to why people are attracted to converting their homes into a smart home.

In today’s times, there is plenty to worry about. At least we have one less thing to worry about when we are living in a smart home. Voice commands through Alexa or Google home are extremely useful features and can be integrated with various devices.

Now imagine, if you want to shut the curtains and just a voice command to Alexa does the job. Alexa shut the curtains! Voila! The drapes start closing by themselves.

Portable Speaker on Brown Wooden Table

Convenience is one of the major selling points of home automation devices, which virtually eliminate small hassles such as turning the lights off before you go to bed. Many systems come with remote dashboard capabilities, so forgetting to turn off that light or air conditioner before you leave no longer requires a turn back of your car to physically turn off the equipment.

Simply open up an app on a smart device or computer and turn off the AC or lights or whatever you forgot to switch off in a hurry! You do not need to physically go, and check If the lights, and fans are off, and doors are locked.

automation air conditioning

Similarly, the entire AV of the house can be controlled through your phone. You can choose to play songs zone-wise in your house or a single song can play in the entire house in event of parties. The volumes and other functions can be easily controlled via mobile phone.

smart bulb
Smart bulb

By opting for Smart entertainment, the entire house can be interconnected. The same video can play in your entire house with the touch of a button. The home can be networked to connect different streaming devices.

Have you heard the term Moccupancy? Yes, you can fake that somebody is at home by programming various devices in your home to turn on and off automatically so that it gives the impression that the house is occupied, and the owners are at home.

Landscaping or outdoor lighting can turn on at sunset and turn off at sunrise thus saving both energy and the hassle of manually doing it each day and forgetting to turn off on most days! They can also be solar thus saving on energy.

smart home

Single-button for multiple functions. E.g. you can turn on or turn off the entire room/house lights with just a single button.

With motion sensors at night turn on the footlight just at 15% intensity, when you make your way to the kitchen for a midnight snack. Enough light to guide you through and not disturb the other occupants in the house.

Program your shades as per the inflow of natural light in the room during different times of the day. They can partially close or open as per the program.

Why would you hate automation?

Nothing vast enters the life of mortals without a curse

– Sophocles

With all the wonderful things that it does for the user, the home automation system comes with few disadvantages as well….

It is dependent on an Internet connection. The moment the connection snaps, the entire system collapses. Also, it needs a high-speed internet connection. If the connection is slow or it drops frequently most of the products connected with it will behave erratically.

It requires a bit of technical knowledge. If you are a tech-savvy person or someone who has a technical background, it is a breeze for you. However, if you are a layman, then it might become challenging to troubleshoot some teething issues which can happen quite often.

automation error

Even with the advancement of technology and falling prices, it is still an expensive proposition to integrate a home and convert it into an automated home.

Most of the devices have limited encryption and are vulnerable to hacking. So, if you have a smart lock on your mind, do proper research about its safety and security.

Sometimes flipping a switch seems a lot easier than opening an app on the phone and switching off the lights!

Not all systems or equipment are compatible with each other. You might end up in a situation where particular equipment can’t be integrated into your hub or controller since it works on an entirely different platform. However, most of the equipment selling nowadays is backward compatible.

I have often been asked what all can be done in our bathrooms to make them smart.

Smart Bathrooms:

Bathrooms are the place where we spend a lot of time introspecting and thinking. Why shouldn’t one do that in the luxury of automated bathrooms?

To start to install the sensor-operated faucets. Not only is it hygienic as there is no touch involved, but it also prevents unnecessary water wastage.

sensor tap
Sensor operated faucet

Jaguar, Kohler, and other companies offer sensor-operated faucets. you can view products here.

Smart Showers :

You can set a particular temperature and pressure of water and the thermostat will take care that they are maintained throughout the shower. For the flow of water, whether you love cascade, spout, mist, or normal shower, you just have to press a button.

The different colored LED lights emitting from the shower gives you a sense of calmness and serenity. And behold, listen to your favorite songs too, with the crisp sound coming right from the showerhead itself. Check out the product here.

Smart W.C. :

High tech WC’s offer a variety of convenience. It is quite common abroad. In Japan, it is used everywhere even in public toilets. You can preheat your seat in cold weather. The lid automatically lifts when you enter the WC enclosure.

It has a water jet with various washing modes. Flushes automatically after usage. Lighting with LED color makes it more attractive. It can be operated with a remote in hand or a control panel attached to the seat. You can view the product here.

Smart mirrors :

Alexa, Google home enabled mirror can show temperature, time, important news of the day on voice command. Or it can turn into a full-fledged TV!!

smart mirror
Smart mirror

Mirror defogging can be done with the press of a button to clear the fog on the mirror for clear reflection.

You can make your shower cubicle glass opaque or transparent on a command! How does that sound… You can even have a waterproof TV with IP 65 rating in your shower to keep you entertained!!

frosted glass
Frosted glass

Also, the hot water requirements can be met by a solar-powered geyser installed on the rooftop. Energy-efficient, environment-friendly hot water system fairs much better than the ordinary geysers in the long run barring the load of the initial cost.

solar water heater
solar water heater

Vendors and costing for automation :

Many companies are providing complete solutions in India including retrofitting solutions. Control 4, Schneider, Philips, Crestron, Lutron to name a few. If you ask me a ballpark figure, I would say a 3 BR house would be retrofitted in around 5 lacs depending on the gadgets to be integrated into the home automation. For a single room, you can expect the expenditure to be around 1 Lac.

Conclusion :

In conclusion, I would say that it is a double edge sword. But given a chance, I would definitely go for it because, in the long run, it is convenient and energy-saving technology that comes with immense peace of mind.
