The entrance to a home is a reflection of what lies ahead, inside your home. Read these easy tips for an awe-inspiring entrance to your abode.

Even if we try not to, we judge a book by its cover, don’t we? Then what about our homes? The design of an entrance can make or break the first impression that we are trying to build. After all, that’s the potential an entryway carries.

An entrance is like an introduction to what lies ahead. It speaks volumes not just about the interiors of your home but also about your personality and style. Therefore, it is like a sneak peek into your lifestyle.

How we want to present ourselves to the world and welcome guests to our place are the domain of the entrance to our dwelling.

entrance Design intention:

  • The entrance presents your home to people. So the most fundamental goal is to make a long-lasting impression on anyone visiting your house.
  • The entry needs to be designed in a way that makes it easy to identify and approach.
  • An entryway is like a trailer of the entire story of your house. Showcase your personality through it.
  • Warm and inviting entrances welcome guests like nothing else.
  • Ensure an easy transition from outside to inside. Keep in mind all the functional requirements for the purpose.

Let us explore the 7 most essential details for an entryway that is not just a show-stopper but also serves its purpose efficiently:

entrance lighting

Lighting for your entryway can help serve three purposes:

  • Adequate light allows you to identify and orient yourself with any place. It can assist in steering the visitors smoothly. Also, adequate lighting keeps an entrance from giving a dingy appearance.
  • Make a statement with a piece of light fitting for the first and the last impression.
  • Accentuate a focal feature at the entrance/entryway.

clean and clutter-free

A clean and clutter-free entrance leaves a lasting impression on your guest’s mind. Who doesn’t like a well-organized and tidy space ensuring an easy transition from outside to inside?

Also, it is believed in India that Goddess Lakshmi enters only a clean house. Therefore, a clean entrance is the first step to ensuring prosperity at home.

inviting greens

A little bit of greenery enables you to welcome your guests with fresh cheer. It is a pleasant sight for anyone to begin the journey of your home. You could just add a few tabletop plants or place potted plants with a hidden light to add some drama.

Moreover, plants are the easiest and most economical additions to infuse life into any space.

focal feature

A feature wall with a textured finish or artwork hung over a console or a state-of-the-art chandelier, anything exquisite can draw the eye of visitors to your house entrance. A gorgeous mirror is another way to add some sparkle and brightness to your entryway.

But place only one or two statement pieces as too many cooks can spoil the broth.

a landing station

Provide a console or tabletop for anyone entering to keep stuff like keys, gloves, phones, etc. Even a charging point would be a welcome addition here.

A basic low bench is not just convenient to wear shoes but gives a very inviting feel to anyone entering. Also, don’t forget a small shoe rack tucked in somewhere in the entryway.

A sturdy outdoor rug is just perfect for this high-traffic zone adding the right dose of warmth and softness. A runner in a bold color or pattern can add the oomph you are aiming for. After all, the whole objective is to provide a comfortable transition for anyone coming to your house.

appealing main entrance

Most importantly, select the main door of your home that is in conformity with the character of your abode’s interiors. Straight and clean-lined or a classic design or something in a bold eye-catching color, whatever suits your style.

In addition, ensure that it is of adequate width and a bit of extra height helps add grandeur to your entrance. And of course, don’t forget a built-in doormat.

explicit entrance identity

Often times the guest feels lost at a home’s entry as there is a lack of clarity. The main entrance appears to be the rear entry or there is no clear nameplate. In other words, a well and creatively-designed nameplate is a must at the entrance.

But never compromise on the clarity and readability of the font for the sake of design.

Hope these tips are useful to you in designing the entrance/entryway of your home. Entrance design is a way to understand how thoughtful you are for your guests. Keep it simple but intriguing enough to catch the eye of your guests.

In conclusion, a functional and clutter-free entryway with your personal stamp is all you need to impress your guests.

Mediterranean style is a take on coastal design. The style is exemplified as an understated luxury, embedded in nature.

Decorating with Mediterranean interior design style is like bringing the holiday spirit straight to your home. Who would not like that relaxed and delightful atmosphere all year round? Hence to keep the exuberance rolling, bring home this airy and scenic style.

Evolved through centuries, the style is witnessed in the coastal countries, bordering the sparkling blue Mediterranean sea. Like the dots of a chain, these include South European countries, like Spain, Greece, Italy, and France, along with others, including Morrocco, Israel, and Turkey.

Though the design ethos in each country is founded in its own rich and distinct culture, there exists a consistent, unifying flavor that is inspired by the gorgeous sea and its landscape. Also, the countries borrow various design elements from one another in some ways.

key elements of Mediterranean style

architectural elements – sense of history

In its backdrop, the Mediterranean style holds ornate and shapely architectural features like arches, balconies, columns, niches, and alcoves with smooth edges. So the nostalgic setup is ideal for the expression of this romantic style in its full glory.

However, a more modern take on this design style is to position contemporary and minimalistic furnishings in a shell loaded with ornate architectural elements and details.

wooden beams – hand hewn details

A hallmark feature for Mediterranean style is exposed wooden beams set on high ceilings, drawing the eyes upwards. These beams enhance the perspective feel of a space, rendering a sense of movement. Also, the directional appeal of these beams is ideal to emphasize any focal point in the space.

ceramic tiles – handmade vibe

From pottery of Italy to the tiles of Spain and Morocco, handpainted ceramics have a special place in this style. These artsy tiles are widely used as kitchen backsplash, on staircase risers, in bathrooms, or as flooring. Cheerful patterns add a pop of color and interest to any space. Also, Saltillo tiles in different shapes add a warm and earthy note to the space.

wrought iron – sense of craft

Intricate scrollwork in wrought iron for railings, gates, and grilles are a hallmark of this style. Also, furniture, pendant lights, chandeliers, candelabras, and other accessories and accents of wrought iron help anchor the look. Black metal hardware works very well with Mediterranean style.

mediterranean style furniture – casual elegance

Vernacular or regional style, European furniture adorns these warm and rooted spaces. The furniture pieces are classic and generally large in scale. Weighty and well-grounded, sturdy pieces that are comfortable, serve well to entertain people.

Armories, big tables, bookshelves, comfortable sofas, high chairs, poufs, impart a cozy and inviting sense. The style is not about passing, trendy furniture. So it is generally handcrafted, comfortable furniture that suggests having been there for a long time.

In conclusion, unrefined, rustic furniture with sinuous details in carved wood or wrought iron inserts is preferred over austere and starved pieces. Natural materials like wrought iron, wood, wicker, leather are used.

mediterranean style color palette – down to earth

The Mediterranean style draws its colors either from the cool, breezy sea or the warm, sun-kissed landscape with vibrant flowers. Color preferences vary with the specific country of the region. Therefore, it is the pristine white that contrasts sharply with lapis or turquoise or cobalt blues, in Greece. Whereas it is the predominance of terracotta and warm clay colors in Spain and Italy.

In either case, the earthy color palette is very soothing and calming for the soul.

In brief, the array of colors seen in Mediterranean style include:

Vivid blue, sea, and sky, tones that impart tranquility. Like seafoam green, turquoise blue, aquamarine, teal, cobalt blue, azure, cerulean…

Warm and earthy tones that are unpretentious and modest. Like yellow ochre, shades of green, red browns, warm greys, olive green, mossy green, burnt orange, clay, brick red, tan, and terracotta…

Light neutral tones form the perfect background. Like sandy beige, stone grey, linen white, chalky white, light straw color…

Bold and rich jewel tones add a pop of color. Like aubergine, emerald green, jade, ruby, lapis…

For instance, consider a neutral background in earthen color and incorporate accent color through hand-painted tiles, rugs, pillows, etc.

weathered look – understated luxury

As if to reveal the effect of nature, the materials and finishes are usually weathered in appearance. The faded and worn character of interiors is easy on the eyes. As a result, even the rich and ornate embellishments are not overbearing for our sensibilities.

Anything that exhibits patina is ideal for the look like driftwood, reclaimed wood, burnished metal, stucco texture, etc. All impart a very natural and endured sense. There is something about this understated and unassuming luxury that appeals to you.

indoor outdoor connection

It is virtually inevitable to have the indoor connected to the mesmerizing outdoors. Windows frame the captivating views enhancing the indoor experience. Outdoor spaces like patios, balconies, and terraces are treated with equal attention and detail. Outdoors are like conforming extensions of the indoors.

The plentiful light and breeze help make the indoors light and bright. Go for plain, breezy, sheer curtains hung on wrought iron rods to nail the look. Olive trees in terracotta pots and bougainvillea blossoms against a Cycladic style, whitewashed, backdrop are a treat for the eyes.

Lighting

Ornate light fixtures with patina, made out of natural materials like wrought iron, wood, or rattan, fit well in this style. Moroccan lanterns in colored glass, fittings with cut stone or metalwork, creating diffused light patterns, are all appropriate for this style. Oversize, classic designs in an antique finish infuse a rustic feel to the space.

Accessories – ornate details

The kind of accessories that blend well in Mediterranean style are :

  • Nautical accessories inspired by blue sea, driftwood objects, ropes, baskets…
  • Handmade ceramic and terracotta pots and vases or vase lamps…
  • Vintage accessories like worn out sculptural finds, metal objects, wooden artifacts…
  • Moroccon pieces like mirrors, lanterns…
  • Accessories out of natural materials like wood, stone, wrought iron, straw, wicker…
  • Fresh green plants in terracotta pots…

In Spain, we see more Moroccan and Islamic influences. Consider having some open shelves to display accessories.

Material Palette – Natural appeal

The material palette consists of natural materials like exposed stone and brick walls. Tuff is the local stone available here. It has a very rustic and natural appeal.

Dark and rich walnut texture, unfinished, reclaimed wood, driftwood, etc. add a slow living vibe.

Rich Venetian plaster on walls adds a visual depth and a sense of movement by virtue of its layered character. Stucco textures impart a rough, rugged, and sandy feel to the walls. The random and wavy, stone-like look provides an aged personality to the surfaces.

Reflective white limewash exteriors are perfect to cool off warm weather. Also, it is visually clean, cool, and relaxing. Limewash also has anti-bacterial properties.

Flooring is generally wooden or terracotta tiles. It imparts a pleasant earthy and tactile feel to the spaces.

Metals like wrought iron, copper, bronze, and dull burnished finishes are ideal for the look.

Wabi-Sabi is the style of the moment, a fact so contrary to its very nature. Wabi-Sabi style is like a recluse who shies away from all the attention.

Instead of giving the meanings of the term, let us first decode the wabi-sabi style by understanding its primary essence. By the time you finish reading this post, the meanings will emerge inevitably.

The philosophy is Japanese in origin but you can easily relate to its viewpoint, no matter wherever you belong.

Wabi-Sabi philosophy

The philosophy, which is rooted in Zen Buddhism, advocates a somewhat modest idea of living. To truly enjoy the bliss of our existence, we must be free of our material attachments. This detached mindset frees us from our corporeal possessions.

Nothing is permanent or forever. It is essential to realize that everything is on a journey towards dissolution. Secondly, no creation is perfect. There is a limit to achieving perfection. Thirdly, nothing is complete. Everything is in a state of growth and hence evolving continuously.

The acceptance of these fascinating truths transforms our perspective towards things, beings, and situations around us. Here I can clearly draw parallels of Wabi-Sabi with our deep Hindu philosophy.

We are reminded of the fact that all existence is formed of the five elements and shall ultimately merge into them. Panchmahabhootas -fire, earth, air, water, and space – are referred to in Hindu philosophy.

Also, in the holy Bhagwad Gita, Shree Krishna asserts:

सर्वभूतानि कौन्तेय प्रकृतिं यान्ति मामिकाम् |
कल्पक्षये पुनस्तानि कल्पादौ विसृजाम्यहम् || 7||
प्रकृतिं स्वामवष्टभ्य विसृजामि पुन: पुन: |
भूतग्राममिमं कृत्स्नमवशं प्रकृतेर्वशात् || 8||

At the end of one kalp, all living beings merge into My primordial material energy. At the beginning of the next creation, O son of Kunti, I manifest them again. Presiding over My material energy, I generate these myriad forms again and again, in accordance with the force of their natures.

Maybe we are diverging from the roots of Wabi-Sabi but our intention is to understand the philosophy in its real sense.

Wabi-Sabi Interior design style

Wabi-Sabi style dates back to the 15th century and finds its origin in the Japanese tea ceremony. It began as a radical response and complete rejection of the overly ostentatious tea ceremonies of those times. In the same way as Modernism, post World War II, Wabi-Sabi represents the dismissal of overembellishment and the urge for perfectionism.

Briefly, the key characteristics of Wabi-Sabi Style include:

  • Authentic – Wabi-Sabi has no pretense. It is about the real chararcter of any element.
  • Simple and minimalistic – Pared down aesthetics of this style are hard to ignore.
  • Imperfect – Embracing the anamolies of nature and age is the essence of the style.
  • Natural – The use of natural materials softens the looks of this style.
  • Rustic – Materials add one of its kind of feel that is simple and modest.
  • Relaxed and tranquil – the style promotes peaceful, quiet, slow living.

How to get a Wabi-Sabi style home

declutter your space

One of the most fundamental measures to get this look is to get rid of the clutter at your home. Minimalism lies at the core of this style.

Less is more ideology induces peace and tranquility, not only to the physical space but also to the mental space. Purging our belongings, to the minimum required ones, unfolds a sense of appreciation for the elements that are more valuable to us.

Details that otherwise succumb to the worldly web of our possessions come forth. Negative or empty space helps bring to focus the beauty of our humble but worthy pieces.

Pare down to the essence but don’t remove the poetry

sight the imperfections

The philosophy of this style encourages us to embrace the flawed beauty of the objects around us. Above all the value of an object is in its intrinsic beauty and its purpose in our life. On the contrary, its external appearance and perfection should be the subjects of less concern.

The chips, cracks, and stains, of an object, document the purpose it has served us over time. They are a testimony of its growth and evolution along with our life’s journey.

wabi-sabi style

In fact, the weathered state of an item reiterates our relation and attachment to it. Therefore, imperfections are not to be treated or managed, rather they deserve to be highlighted.

The flawed appeal of an element has a story to tell. Our endeavor is to narrate that story through our interior design. For instance, the stories written on the wrinkles of our granma’s face or the tattered pages of a well-read book are to be cherished and not to be erased.

Once we achieve perfection the scope of further growth ceases. Also, perfection is difficult to achieve.

wabi-sabi interiors

In brief, we can create imperfections in wabi-sabi style through :

  • Furniture – Mix and match furniture that is out of proportions, appears used, with cracks and chips, has rough edges, and weathered finish. Basically as imperfect as it can get. Low profile furniture with smooth, organic shapes works well. Go for rattan, bamboo, exposed timber, concrete, knotted finish etc. Reclaimed wood pieces or live edges of tables work seamlessly here.
  • Finishes – that are rough, withered and peeled off.

For example, lime wash paint, exposed concrete finish, neutral and faded wallpapers, exposed brickwork, mud finish for walls.

Rustic and weathered ceramic tiles, IPS, weathered wooden, terrazzo flooring.

We can go for raw, bare timber poles and planks for ceiling, etc.

Unfinished, weathered, flawed, used over time is what our intention is.

Credit – @imagicasa.be
  • Art and accesories – Humble and modest pieces are the soul of this style. Few options to consider include:

Broken, cracked, chipped clay and ceramic pots that seem irregular and out of proportions in shape and form.

Abstract, incomplete, and handmade paintings.

Things from nature like weathered stones, driftwood, rusted objects, etc displayed creatively.

Dried branches, pampas grass, fallen dried leaves.

Japanese art- Ikebana-style flower arrangements. The minimalistic style of arranging stems and flowers, where even a solitary flower in a sculptural vase becomes the focus of the whole arrangement,

  • Light fixtures – Deformed, dispropotionate light fixtures, installed asymmetrically.

The material could be rattan, metal, paper, ceramic, concrete, or wood. Imperfect and unfinished in some way with a rustic appeal.

wabi-sabi style

To conclude terms like symmetry, balance, perfection, refined, curated, well organized, expensive, new, etc. are not on our list for this style essentials.

natural materials

With an emphasis on the use of materials in their natural and rustic form, Wabi-Sabi style is not about pretense. Rather it values the authenticity of elements. The real character and appearance of materials, without any cosmetics, are dear to the style. The authenticity of materials from nature is truly unquestionable.

simpleliving
Credit – @imagicasa.be

Natural materials intrinsically age gracefully. The patina developed over time is unique and impossible to replicate. It is indeed one of its kind.

Also, the materials received from mother earth are naturally humble and down to earth. Exemplifying the beauty emerging from an organic character, they are perfectly imperfect. Defying all standards and rules of perfection they are naturally appealing.

Wabi-sabi style color palette

The color palette for the Wabi-Sabi style is typically warm, neutral, and inspired by the earthen tones. Shades of clay, mud, terracotta imbibe a warm womb-like ambiance.

Rough and unfinished, worn-out surfaces add depth to the play of light and shadows. Picture the pale view of a decaying, worn-out shack in the midst of the earthen landscape.

Credit – @imagicasa.be

wabi-sabi fabrics and patterns

Natural, tactile, hand-made fabrics with conspicuous woven textures like linen, cotton, burlap, jute, hemp, gauze, etc are the obvious choice to dress the look. Wrinkled and crinkled fabric breathes life into the style. Undyed fabric adds an elegant raw and unfinished vibe.

Wabi-Sabi style is not very pattern friendly. Muted, modest patterns, usually handmade, tribal, and rustic in nature, with obvious defects form the core here. Organic and natural patterns can also be used.

slowlived

kintsugi

Kintsugi or golden joinery is the Japanese art of binding the broken pieces of pottery using lacquer mixed with gold dust.

kintsugi

The whole idea here is to flaunt the flaws of the broken piece instead of discarding or throwing it. The damage reveals the inner strength of the piece. Upcycling somewhat adds to its appeal. Indeed, this is the highest lesson of acceptance of imperfections and appreciation of our possessions.

In Conclusion

Coming back to understanding the meanings:

Wabi means rustic simplicity, beauty attributed to austerity, and the understated nature of things.

Sabi means beauty that comes with age. The unique patina occurs due to the anomalies gained over time.

In a true sense, the design style should need no intervention from any designer. It is the acceptance and appreciation of what you already have. It requires no new purchasing. Savor what you possess along with its weaknesses.

If you have an easygoing personality you will love the slow, quiet, and intimate vibes of this style. It rids us of the excesses and fixed conventions about aesthetics. A much-needed break in today’s world of distractions and race for possessions. A wabi-sabi house is a perfect place to take a pause, introspect and enjoy the moment as it is. Although, this style is not for you if you like slick, flawless, and polished spaces.

However, to intentionally stage this look you need to be careful and not be intentional. I hope the tips provided in this blog are helpful to you. What is your take on Wabi-Sabi style? Would you like to decorate your space in this style? Does the style suit your personality? Do leave a comment below.

The simplicity of Mid-century modern interior style is easy to understand yet compelling. It is a welcome break from the design strategy of surpluses. Genuine applause for both art and functionality.

Mid-century modern style nudges us into an era portrayed in many old American T.V. shows. It evokes nostalgia for the furniture pieces we saw at our grandparents’ homes. An era that was characterized by pop and abstract art.

The style ferries us into a post-World War II period that spans between the 1940s to 1970s. Necessity is the mother of all inventions. It is truly exemplified by this period.

From the desire to address the design aspirations of the common man were born some of the geniuses. George Nelson, Eero Saarinen, Charles & Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi, Jens Risom, Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier to name a few.

What was produced by them was not just artsy but also innovative. It was perfect matrimony of form and function. The timeless iconic designs are stunning and captivating to date.

History has always influenced the design process. We learn from it, are inspired by it, and tend to revive what was once an overdose. Today we see mid-century designs all over the place. The timeless appeal of this style is evident from its popularity.

Why Midcentury interior design style?

Although the design style is open to interpretation, in its soul it carries a few relevant and flawless lessons.

  • Simple and clean

Though Mid-century modern interior style is simple, clean, and minimal, it is far from being sterile and frigid. It is surprisingly warm and inviting. A delightful nod for the maxim – simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

  • Timeless appeal

The iconic furniture pieces designed in the ’60s and 70s stand the test of time and are hence timeless in a true sense. Simple forms and shapes, both geometric and organic, paved the way for genuine aesthetics for years to come.

  • Innovative use of materials

A clever combination of natural and unusual man-made materials empowered the designers with immense options. Mass production of furniture made it cost-effective and available to society.

  • Open plan concept

After WW II the footprint of the dwellings was reduced. The introduction of the open-plan concept enabled the spaces to appear visually expansive and fluid.

  • Indoor-Outdoor Connection

The construction methodology with beams and columns allowed for big windows that connected the indoor spaces with the outdoors. Another pleasant shift from traditional closed-in spaces.

The designers of this period revolutionized the design industry and turned its philosophy by hundred and eighty degrees. They rejected the overly ornate and embellished design style, restricted to the rich. This design movement was more accessible and democratic.

warm wood

One of the reasons that keep this style from being stark and cold is the generous use of natural wood. Warm wood exudes an earthen vibe into these spaces.

The wood can be incorporated in flooring, wall paneling, ceilings, and of course the furniture.

However, a few points to consider while choosing the wood are:

  • Choose the variety of wood/veneer that is mid-tone, niether too dark nor too light. Like teak, mahogany, red oak, rosewood, walnut, mahogany, elmwood etc. Basically wood with reddish-brown or honey undertones suits the style. Preferrable to go for wood/veneer with linear grains.

  • It is important to understand that wooden elements must not have any ornamentations like mouldings, cornices or carvings. Just plain and simple wood in its elementary form. Battened, planked and slatted look works well here. The straight lines combined with the organic shapes of furniture, accessories play off each other very well.

organic and geometric shapes & patterns

Again, it is the basic, simple geometry that needs to be respected when it comes to the use of patterns in mid-century modern interiors. Graphical rugs, geometrical wallpapers, organic designs for textiles, etc. create that desired retro vibe.

Since the overall aesthetics are very minimal and clean-lined, the bold patterns help accentuate and bring key elements in the focus. It is like tempering the whole mix and adding a twist with these retro patterns.

Go for bold patterns in vivid mid-century colors with playful juxtapositioning of both linear and organic shapes and forms.

bare windows

The whole idea of mid-century modern homes was to connect with nature. The advent of beam and column construction methodology made this possible.

Soaring ceilings and openings with large glass panes, without any mullions, framed the exteriors beautifully. Interiors were fresh and filled with natural light from windows, clerestories, skylights, etc.

Big bare windows with no or minimal dressing are the key to finishing the look. A space bathed in natural light, highlighting the textures of various materials is so so mid-century. Windows are like framed art pieces with a view.

abstract and funky art and accessories

With the pop art movement and abstract modern art on the rise, the era marked a huge shift from the traditions.

Accessories are like mini sculptures. Art and accessory are minimal but whatever is there is a statement piece worthy of all the attention.

mid-century color palette

The colors of mid-century interiors are warm, earthy, and muted. Though the colors are saturated they are muted therefore are not in the face.

Colors like mustard yellow, pumpkin orange, peacock blue, brown, maroon, teal, apple green, sage, mark the style. Even pastels like baby pink and baby blue also work well here.

Broadly you could choose a color scheme out of the following three options, depending on your color preferences:

  • An entirely neutral color scheme, in case you are color shy.

As discussed earlier, natural light is paramount in the style. Whatever lighting fixtures are used are again based on the same principle of simple lines and forms.

The period marked the use of many revolutionary and unexpected materials like molded plywood, fiberglass, plastic, glass, marble, ceramic, etc.

A clever mix of contrasting natural and man-made materials innovatively is the key to getting the look.

Manmade materials add clean and streamlined aesthetics and natural materials and textures add the much-needed variety and character. Leather,

Scandinavian interiors possess a luminous radiance and breathe in fresh air to any space. The elegant purity accompanying the charming warmth is certainly alluring and irresistible.

After designing a couple of offices for a Swedish bank in India, I got the sense of words like simple, minimal, and white. These ordinary words, deeply ingrained in their philosophy, evolve into some extraordinary designs.

As Nordic countries including Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Iceland experiences harsh winters for most of the year, this influences their design style to a great extent.

Despite the cultural and climatic differences, the style is a rage in the design world today. You can see so many Scandinavian influences in the current interior design trends.

Well if you are someone who admires the elegance of a white linen shirt or a monochromatic illustration set on a white background or a tripod floor lamp with a white shade, you are in the right place. Read on to know about Scandinavian Interior design style.

However, if you love bold colors on your walls or a rich mix of patterns in your textiles, or the elaborate chandelier over your dining table then this is not your style. Nevertheless, keep reading, maybe you change your mind after reading this post!

Scandinavian interiors and mid-century modern interiors

Rooted in the early 20th century, the style is a close cousin of Mid-century modern interior design style. For instance, both the styles represent the modern movement and are embodiments of rejecting the traditional style of decoration. The Scandinavian style influenced the mid-century modern style to a great extend.

Since the furniture retail giant- IKEA is now present in India, therefore, I feel inspired and excited to discuss Scandinavian Style. IKEA is a synonym for Scandinavian design and delivers these clean aesthetics to the common households.

Perhaps the hectic lifestyle and superfluity around us drive us towards the relaxing, serene, and austere quality of this style.

The inherent characteristics of Scandinavian interiors are:

  • Uncomplicated and pristine aesthetics
  • Minimalistic approach
  • light and fresh feel
  • Easy to implement
  • Affordable
  • Easy to maintain

Hygge

At the backdrop of all these spaces is the Danish philosophy – Hygge at work, which means cozy and comfortable. Although these spaces are pared down and monochromatic, they are loaded with warmth and comfort.

hygge

With this desire to create warm gathering spaces with plenty of cozy elements you can use elements like soft sheepskin rugs, wool or faux fur throws, candles, wood-burning stoves…

This style demonstrates that a sense of warmth and coziness go beyond the material possessions in a house. It all depends on how welcomed and at home, you feel in an abode.

how to get Scandinavian interiors

Go for simple, clean-lined furniture

The furniture is low profile, streamlined and user-friendly. Furniture silhouettes are delicate and lean in appearance. Juxtapositioning of straight and sinuous lines and forms creates interest and at the same time keeps the space from being heavy and stuffy.

The shutters of the cabinetry are flat paneled. They have flush or sleek hardware. They are seamless, white, or pale wood in color. The spotless and clutter-free appearance of these spaces is notable.

These pared-down, sleek, and unassuming pieces are just enough to meet the functional requirements in terms of both quantity and quality. As a result, there is a lot of breathing space between furniture pieces.

White or light wood pieces with tall skeletal legs generate an airy feel. In addition, the upholstery is mostly solid white or of other pale neutrals.

Colour Palette

The most favored color is of course, clean and crisp white. Various shades of white bounce off light and keep the space bright and airy. To impart a Scandinavian edge, other soft neutrals like dove grey, taupe, light beige, etc are also used.

In addition, colors, like blush pink, powder blue, mint green, in their pale and muted form. Black or other bright colors are used as accents. This is balanced by swathes of white. To bring a punch to these withered spaces include graphic patterns. This can be achieved through rugs, cushions, artwork, and accessories.

Scandinavian interiors

Artwork and accessories

Art and accessories are minimal but worthy of attention. The colors are monochromatic and muted. In other words, nothing is very loud or gaudy. Scandinavians find the art in ordinary things. Their furniture itself is a piece of art.

Modern designs and streamlined gallery walls with black and white photographs or portraits, landscape paintings, illustrations, sketchy art, are common. Also, the frames are thin and monochromatic.

Accessories of clear glass and ceramic are based on the philosophy of minimalism and are light and sculptural. They ooze out a handmade vibe. Mirrors are used to reflect and maximize the prevalent natural light.

Generally, rugs and cushions are also neutral in color but you can add pops of colors and balance it with white. Candles are their favorite accessory.

Blonde Wood

A lighter variety of wood is used to prevent a space from becoming a cavern. Beech, pine, birch, ash is the common wood varieties that you can use. Flooring is almost always wood.

In Scandinavian interiors, herringbone is the hallmark pattern. In addition to the flooring, furniture and ceiling are other obvious places for wood application.

Wood helps add the much-needed warmth and coziness to the otherwise white and stark space.

lighting

As already discussed, in Nordic countries light is definitely one of the most precious assets. The region faces harsh weather for almost three-quarters of a year. As a result, it gets dark very early during winters.

Scandinavian interiors
credit – @bostadsrattsspecialisten

Maximum light is allowed to come into the spaces. This helps evade the gloom. Architecturally there are big windows, clerestories, skylights, etc. The windows are left bare. Mirrors and other glass elements help bounce off as much light as possible.

However, it depends on the location of the country where you live. In India, for instance, the summers are quite harsh and leaving windows bare, especially on the southern and western sides, is impractical.

Select light-colored or rather white fabrics, like linen and cotton, in case you are going for drapes and blinds.

In addition, try to create coziness and warmth through your artificial lighting scheme. Remember Hygge is our aim! Candles are used to create a warm vibe.

Common types of fixtures include – branched chandeliers inspired by nature, simple pendants out of clear glass, brass, copper, or paper balloon-shaped, black metal lamp-shaped scones mounted on walls, tripod floor lamps, organically shaped table lamps, etc.

hygge

Mix it up

This style allows you to mix up the traditional or vintage pieces with simpler and modern-looking ones. However, remember, whatever you include must be sleek and low profile in character.

Everything works well together because a neutral scheme ties all the elements up. The neutrals help mellow down the intricacies of traditional elements, unifying them with the rest of the clean lines.

In the picture below a traditional sofa in the foreground gels beautifully with the structural and straight-lined dining furniture in the background. Neutrality brings the two to level ground. Also, the busy branched chandelier contrasts well with the pared-down dining furniture.

We often see many iconic pieces designed in the early and mid-century periods in the current Scandinavian designs. Legendary Scandinavian designers include  Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, Danish furniture designer Hans Wegner, Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, Finnish interior designer Eero Arnio, and Swedish IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad.

Nordic style

inspiration from nature

These Nordic countries have beautiful sceneries and abundant forests around them. Hence, their interiors are inspired by nature considerably.

  • Natural, tactile and solid neutral textiles like cotton, linen, velvet, suede, leather, sheepskin, wool, faux fur, animal hides, enhance the look.
Nordic interiors
Credit – @decommunity
  • Organic shapes and forms inspired by nature, for furniture and accessories, add a natural vibe.
organic shapes

  • Light Wood in its natural form or bleached or painted white, to impart a weathered look. The wood color blends well with the predominantly white space and at the same time induces a sufficient sense of contrast.
  • Piles of cut firewood stacked around stoves adds a touch of nature to the interiors.
hygge

  • When most of the exterior landscape is covered with snow, indoor plants are a welcome addition.

In conclusion, there is no room for saturated colors, glitzy, shiny fabrics. Minimal and monochromatic is the idea.

These natural and tactile textures and elements add contrast and visual depth to these austere-looking spaces. After all, the purpose is to induce warmth through simplicity and minimalism.

Bohemian decor is inconsiderate of the rules but its warmth and richness just melt your heart and invite you into a world that oozes with personality.

Boho is in trend and no not as a DIY fervor but as a very professional assortment of interior elements. Whether you have traveled the world over or not you can still get this global look right if you follow a few tips. Yes, the style is free-spirited and has no respect for the rules but if you want the jaw-dropping vibe, you need to put in that extra effort.

Personally, I am not a big fan of either maximalism or minimalism, as far as interior styling is concerned. I prefer the middle path. If not done right Boho can infuse a sense of clutter and confusion into a space. It is the right balance that fills your space with this warm and inviting style.

For those of you who don’t know anything about Bohemian decor, I am giving a brief introduction first.

The word Boho comes from Bohemian which refers to the gypsies. They are believed to have originated from Bohemia in central Europe. Gypsies are typical of unconventional, nomadic, and artistic lifestyles. The style belongs to the 1970s.

As the name suggests Boho interior styling is all about being creative in an unconventional way. It is a pure reflection of your personality. Your likes and dislikes in a very bold and pompous manner.

Bohemian decor Style has:

Rich colors and patterns

Since this eclectic style is more of an artistic expression, it is bound to be rich in colors and patterns.

You can mix any kind of pattern especially suzani, ikat, tribal, kilim, Moroccan, Indian, Persian, oriental, animal prints, etc given their bold artistic motifs and forms, in rich jewel tones. Patterns are simply mixed together without matching or coordinating. Idea is to create a global, well-traveled vibe.

Classic bohemian decor

You see patterns everywhere – throw pillows, upholstery, rugs, drapes, throws, tiles, etc. You can add contrast with bold geometric patterns.

colorful bohemian

Classic Boho decor style uses vivid and rich colors like purple and gold, red and green, turquoise, and mustard.

Neutral Boho Chic is a more modernized version of this style. Here, the base is of warm neutrals like cream, beige, vanilla, and other earthen tones. Then you can play with various textures and patterns to add visual interest.

Neutral bohemian chic

plentiful in textures

Bohemian decor shouts out the textures. It shows off the tactile look through natural rugs, knitted throws, cane accessories, plants, and planters, exposed brick walls, macrame wall hangings, or plant holders, woven pillows, baskets, and anything else that you can think of.

bohemian textures

These natural and woven materials and textures like sisal, jute, wicker, burlap, linen, cotton, natural wood, add depth, warmth, and a handmade appeal to the interior spaces. They can be contrasted with leather, velvet, silk, sheepskin, wool, etc. The intention is to enhance the demonstrative appeal of this style.

boho textures

rugs in layers

Rugs don’t just impart pattern and color but also infuse a space with that much-needed warmth. Textured rugs underneath our feet invite us to step and feel the weave.

bohemian rugs

Layering rugs with a plain jute rug as a base adds another dimension to the room. The rug on top can be something bold in terms of pattern and color.

layer rugs

casual and relaxed feel

Bohemian decor is all about creating a casual, laid-back space that looks lived in and approachable. A place to hang out and chit-chat with your friends, over a cup of coffee. Informal, cozy, and warm.

casual boho vibe

Just add elements like low seating, floor pillows, Morrocan leather poufs, ottomans, knitted throws to get the signature free and easy feel in a Boho decor space. Also, paintings and mirrors leaning against the wall, piles of books lying on the floor are just a few ways for a relaxed feel.

vintage pieces

The idea here is to use what you have. it could be an inherited furniture piece, something you purchased on one of your vacations, or some flea market purchase. Just refurbish and it is good to go. Mid-century pieces also do very well in this style.

bohemian decor

The furniture pieces do not need to match with each other or belong to a specific style. A collected and evolved look rather than a curated one is what defines this style. Whatever gives a sense of belonging and personality is good enough to be incorporated here.

bohemian vintage

What we want is an easy-going, homey feel. The more worn out and rough the corners are, the better it is. Don’t aim for perfection. Something in a bold vivid color also looks spectacular and quirky. Furniture styles that contrast with each other add the unconventional touch here.

boho

lots of plants

Perhaps the free-flowing organic nature of plants resonates so well with this style. The free-spirited, wild jungle feel gives a sense of adventure to the indoors.

plants bohemian decor

The opposite can also create an environment just as magical. That is taking indoors out. Casual seating with linen curtains, fairy lights, and lanterns set in the outdoor landscape can feel so romantic.

outdoors with wicker

The plants that go well are the ones with bold, sculptural, tropical foliage and form like monstera, cacti, fiddle fig, vines, etc.

Place plants creatively around the space, at various levels to allow the movement of the eyes.

plants boho

rattan and wicker

Rattan and wicker items remind us of the 1970s. The natural woven forms fill the space with both a casual and natural vibe. And that is why they gel so well with this design style.

wicker and rattan

This furniture and accessories are very textural and the light natural color works well with the Bohemian decor style. The beautiful patterns create an organic and cozy look.

varied light sources

Lighting is a very important aspect of interior design. If you want to know more about interior lighting, click here.

A boho setup aims for a romantic, warm, cozy ambiance by using different light sources like lamps, fairy lights, woven pendants, Moroccan lanterns, even scented candles.

Wicker pendants are also very popular these days.

artsy touch

After all the style is inspired by the Bohemians therefore art has to speak through each element of the space.

Gallery walls work very well when they have an eclectic composition. Anything that confers a well-traveled feel, with a story to tell, works well here. To learn more on gallery walls, click here.

Even baskets displayed on walls look stunning. The idea is to do something unconventional.

What about a combination of all…..

Funky macrame wall hangings, tassel strings, tapestry on walls, granting a handmade and personal feel, all look at home here.

fragrance

Nothing defines personal more than the fragrances we choose and like. In India camphor is a very popular ingredient and is burnt not only for religious significance but also for its medicinal value.

fragrances

Whatever you like, go for something natural and subtle rather than artificial cocktails of scents.

We identify ourselves with that peculiar smell of our homes that belongs only to us.

boho bathroom

But how to handle a style that is so eclectic and vague in its appearance. Fret not for here are a few guidelines and ideas to consider before you go Boho. Do not forget our intention is to make it look unintentional and evolved space.

  • Follow a clear color scheme
  • Give eyes place to rest
  • Incorporate something unique and quirky
  • Mix patterns thoughtfully
  • Go neutral boho chic for a calmer look

The style is clearly not for someone who aims for a spotless, manicured type of space. Who likes things to be very formal and organized following rules, matching elements. The design language of this style is straight from the heart and believes not to care what others think or the rules say.

You will love this style if you like casual, laid-back vibes in a space. things are not perfect but they exude a sense of warmth and personality. Ther is an artistic flair that belongs to the owner.

The style reminds me of our mothers knitting crochet table cloths and putting them everywhere. Also money plants in spare glass bottles used to adorn the dining tabletops. Well, what matters is the spirit and a home is a place that must reflect you as a person, whatever the style is.

I hope my post awakens the Boho in you and sets your spirits high!!

Till next time

A mother by heart and an architect by profession, I am tabulating a few considerations for designing cheerful kids’ bedrooms, with ease and understanding.

Going down my memory lane, I remember enjoying rides on a green metal swing kept in our balcony. I remember a table having a royal blue mica with a dining table chair as my desk, to study on. Writing on the doors of our apartment with chalk, while talking to myself, owning a black stray cat as my own, putting up a tent with pillows and cushions for the wedding of my dolls….. I remember sharing space with my siblings.

Well, the priceless memories are countless and we all have our own share of cherished remembrances in our subconscious minds. These happy memories stay with us forever.

The surroundings and the belongings, we grow with, leave a lasting imprint on us. We narrate our childhood stories to our children. We wish to pass on the goodness of those growing-up stories. From our own experiences, we realize what we could not possess or accomplish and wish not to deprive our children of the same.

kids

We were privileged and blessed and so are our children for getting the best from their parents. Unfortunately, many children have to struggle even for the basics. I just finished reading the book Refugee by Alan Gratz. it is a heartbreaking tale of three children, struggling for their existence. ( click here to read my review).

In an effort to ensure that our children carry sweet and healthy memories of their stay with us, we venture on a mission to design the best kids’ bedrooms for them. Surroundings help mould a child’s psychology. Shaping their spaces is like shaping their future and personality. An ill-equipped, deprived, unorganized, cramped space gives rise to a disturbed mind fighting for space. A well-thought-out space assists in the healthy upbringing and conditioning of the child.

kids' bedroom
Photo by Huy Nguyen on Unsplash

The delightful experience of working for children is very satisfying and rewarding. Relatively undemanding they are quick to please. They are so enthused to watch their room being designed. I feel privileged and love the joyful journey of designing rooms for kids.

The challenges are of a different kind here. Children grow really fast and so do their fast-changing needs. It might not be as simple as it looks. We want to design each detail with utmost care and attention for these small wonders.

Let the child participate in the design process.

Children love to participate in whatever is happening around them. Sometimes we just don’t care to pay attention to what they have to say. They can surprise us with their insightful suggestions. Kids also have very strong favorites. Find out their favorite colors and build a sensible palette around them.

They feel very responsible in taking decisions and learn to live with them. The importance bestowed on them fills them with confidence. So it is a good idea to involve the kid in the informed decision-making process.

List out the functional needs of the child in accordance with the age. Then clearly demarcate each activity within the space. A well set out play area, hobby corner, homework station, sleeping, lounging area, etc encourage the child to focus and engage better. Otherwise, the confused minds of little ones end up doing homework on a bed or eating on a bed.

kid's craft area

Defined zoning helps them to engage in each activity without getting distracted.

Young minds get bored so easily. Statements like `what to do?’, or `I have nothing to do now’ are frequent. A space that keeps them engaged and busy is ideal. Easy to access, visually available objects keep them busy. They are encouraged to use their belongings if they are visible and accessible to them. A world map on one of the walls for example would keep the kid engaged and dream big.

For the inevitable clutter provide for sufficient and easy to access storage. Books, stationary, notebooks, clothes, socks, accessories, stuffed toys, toys, board games huff.. the list is endless. There is a need to clearly mark out storage, which may be labeled, to keep the confusion at bay. Clearly, the need for storage is huge here. Children tend to accumulate so much in a short period of time.

kid's storage
Photo by Taylor Heery on Unsplash

Drawers, cabinets, bookshelves, wardrobes, cubbyholes we need to consider all possibilities. But teach them to get rid of the clutter regularly.

These restless, inquisitive and naughty creatures can be very unpredictable. Their agile and overactive bodies can land them in trouble. Whatever is being designed must ensure safety. Covers for electrical outlets, hidden cables, rounded and soft edges, non-slippery surfaces, accessible shelving, window security are a few points to consider.

Go for furniture that is easy to move around and is light and airy in feel. Heavy furniture pieces confirming a particular style add to the already stuffy nature of the room. Multipurpose furniture serves well here. Furniture pieces that have the right dimensions to suit the child. Mix up small and large-scale pieces for longevity. If we select everything small scale we might need to change very soon.

kids' bedroom
Photo by Kelli McClintock on Unsplash

A desk and chair that ergonomically suit the child is a must. Chairs with back support, adjustable height, armrest, footrest all are essential for the right posture. Sofa, bed, etc. are preferred in adult size. Arranging furniture along the periphery creates a play area in the middle.

kids' bedroom
Photo by Jelena Mirkovic on Unsplash

We need to literally look at our space from their eyes. Bend down to their height and perceive the space from there. How do you find a shelf high up beyond your reach or an art piece you can not even see and comprehend. Consider the ergonomics for your child.

Designing a room around favorite cartoon characters or princesses and fairylands are all bygone now. Children grow at the speed of light. So do their tastes and preferences. Designing the rooms with beds in the form of a car or a train engine is all very innovative but is a huge waste at the same time. Kids outgrow this ultra kiddish stuff way too fast. Instead of burning a hole in your pocket with themed investment pieces, you can work on a theme through swappable and replaceable items like bedsheets, cushions, lamps, accessories, etc.

A kid’s room is a place where you can have a lot of fun designing. You get the opportunity to incorporate those bold and whimsical patterns and colors. The choice of colors depends on many factors one of the important ones being the age of the kid. For a nursery soothing, light pastels work well. In a toddler’s room bright, saturated colors impart the zeal. And for teens and pre-teens, a more mature palette is recommended.

kids' bedroom

A bold wallpaper with a geometrical pattern or floral and animal prints and motifs is befitting. You could pick a focal wall or back of a bookshelf to display wallpaper. A patterned headboard, cushions, quilts, rugs are other places to play with patterns.

Kids need sufficient light to perform various activities efficiently. Proper ambient, task and accent lighting ensure that the kid stays alert and active and is able to focus better. Functions like reading, homework, painting, drawing, crafts, etc need a prolonged use of eyes and ample light is a must.

A bedroom that is connected to nature is healthy and vibrant for the kid. Try to choose a bedroom location that is connected to some open space – a balcony, a courtyard, or even a window with a view. A window seat is a nice place to read a book.

Apart from being functionally efficient ensure that the room is cozy and warm for the child. Children love to cuddle in corners with cushions, stuff toys, etc. A spongy reading chair or sofa with lots of cushions, rugs on the hard floor, bean bags, drapes, and blinds soften the space. A reading corner next to a window is a nice idea to encourage a child to read.

Personalize the space. Children naturally have a sense of ownership. They love to own and claim things. They love to write their names on objects. Personal pieces like art, accessories give them a sense of belonging and adds warmth to the bedroom.

fun and funky elements

Keep the room in good humor and add some funky elements for the kids to enjoy. A small tent house, tepee in a corner, a whimsical painting, fun quotations, help add a touch of fancy to the room that kids enjoy. A canopy bed or poster bed with sheer curtains or a bunk bed in the shape of a house, fill the room with a dreamy air.

Children love to have a hideaway corner where they can dream and make plans and talk to themselves.

Design a space that evolves with the growing child. The room should have the flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the child. We should be able to swap things without touching on the essence of the space for a substantial period.

For a child his/her room is like a home within the home. It has to be self-sufficient and private for the child to enjoy the stay. Kids have a strong sense of territory. They love to own a part of the land and entertain their friends there. We need to respect their privacy and independence. A constant observation kinda scenario can hamper a child’s growth and development. Especially teenagers need that me time to recharge themselves.

The intention in designing a kid’s bedroom is to create a wholesome, reassuring, comfortable, and pleasant space. Even if it is not very luxurious the soulful sectors drive the child to spend some memorable moments. Where they share a hearty laugh with friends, a warm hug with their parents, a fight with their siblings…

For these twinkle-eyed cute little ones, we need to design from our hearts. In fact, the whole house has to be designed in a child-friendly manner. We hope that the spaces designed for them help them dream big, boost their confidence for them to have an enjoyable stay. It is worthwhile to realize that one day these special people will move on in the journey of their life with some happy moments to cherish for a lifetime.

Till next time…..

Clutter like an infectious disease keeps growing in our abodes, unnoticed, neglected and overlooked by us. Take up the unnerving task of clearing the clutter for the minimalist home for your well being.

Scrolling down a few videos, once I stumbled upon one of a bright and young girl dressed up in all her glory. But I was bewildered to discover that she was about to renounce the material world and embrace monkhood. While the tremendous resolve and courage of her decision deserved acknowledgment but it immersed me into sorrow.

My thoughts were clouded more by shades of sympathy than appreciation. Well letting go to such an extreme was inconceivable for me personally.

After a few months, we had to move to our new house that required a rigorous culling of our possession of years. We were almost on an archeological mission, unearthing a forgotten world, hidden in the closets, under a layer of dust. So much accumulated stuff to deal with!

Suddenly I was reminded of that young girl who had given up on a gleaming life to follow her passion. Here I was in the middle of the unnecessary stuff that was occupying so much space in the house.

Well, I am by no means saying that I am planning for monkhood! But I could sense the paradoxical situation. And that was the awakening call for me, the epiphany.

The realization of time to time decluttering dawned over me. We keep accumulating and shoving it into our closets in anticipation of using it someday. And that someday never arrives.

how to handle clutter ?

Marie Kondo is a well-known decluttering crusader who has written a popular book – The life-changing magic of tidying up. She sets out the famous KonMari principles for decluttering in her book. Recently I read a book on decluttering – The minimalist home by Joshua Becker. There is a lot of literature available on the subject.

Various methods are advocated by various people, to face the clutter at our home. But I believe there is no one-size-fits-all solution for the problem.

my approach for clutter

A few points that I personally relate to regarding the stuff monster at our homes are listed below:

buy thoughtfully

  • Buy new items or products thoughtfully. Think before buying anything new. You are committing a space for that item in your house, no matter how small.

Personally, I am not an impulsive buyer and do not fall for the marketing gimmicks easily. But I have seen people close to me buying out of habit or just to keep boredom at bay. It is kind of therapeutic for them. What you buy comes home and disappears to occupy corners of your home. Soon resulting in clutter, without your realization.

keep surfaces free

  • Keep the flat surfaces of furniture like table tops, kitchen counter tops, shelves etc. as clear as possible.

A simple act of clearing the tabletops of unnecessary stuff has a hugely positive psychological effect on me. People are generally in a habit of putting everything on the flat tops just for convenience. Keys, notebooks, shopping bags, newspapers, etc. Keep it where it belongs and free the surfaces.

clutter free space

minimize storage space

  • Do not create storage spaces where they do not exist like under the bed, over the doors. The more you create more you accumulate.

Difficult to access hidden storage spaces are like magnets that attract all unwanted objects. We never access them and the stuff appears as a surprise find whenever we happen to open such spaces. it is very infectious to fill such storages up for later. Out of sight means out of our minds.

be decisive

  • Make piles of clutter into categories like throw, keep, donate and take action decisively.

Let go of your stuff after due consideration. Get rid of donation bags fast. Do not let them hang around for long. I have experienced such bags hanging around in our car hoods, spare rooms for months. Donate to whatever place is convenient for you. Uday foundation is one such place where you can donate.

digitize

  • Buy and go digital wherever possible. Digitization can help us reduce the visual clutter to a large extend.

We can easily scan documents, photographs, crafts made by kids, etc. Wherever possible we should try to store data on computers with backup. But be wary of the digital clutter you might end up with. Be organized with your digital storage well.

digitize clutter

simplify your life

  • Wherever possible use simple tools and devices. Do not clutter your spaces with specialized gadgets and equipment.

I remember buying a pineapple peeler for my kitchen. But found using it so cumbersome that doing the job with a simple knife was much quicker and easier. Simplify your choices wherever you can.

remove duplicates

  • Remove duplicates. Shoes, clothes, utensils, stationery, there can be duplicates in all realms, in all probability. The reason is simple- just in case.

We keep on stocking on duplicates in the apprehension of needing the other in case we lose the first. But we don’t realize the amount of burden we are carrying in the name of the backup. The clutter is far more detrimental to our well-being compared to a little inconvenience.

organized clothes
Photo by Dhruv Patel on Unsplash

be practical

  • Don’t carry the emotional baggage along. Sometimes we carry gifts, inherited things, memoirs, etc just because we feel obligated to.

Nobody gives us a gift to burden us. No dear one who has left this world wants us to keep their stuff as an obligation. There are better ways of remembering people whom we have lost. If something evokes sadness or a feeling of regret it is all the more imperative to get rid of it.

get rid of t.v.

  • I have always felt very strongly against having a tv in the bedroom. We must refrain from installing one in our or kids’ bedroom too.

Bedroom is a place to relax and unwind after the grind of the day. T.v has the potential to clutter not just physical space but also mental space. I always advocate against a t.v. in the bedroom. A t.v. requires a credenza and then you start eating in front of t.v. and slowly it only escalates from there.

organize

  • Once you have done the daunting job of decluttering don’t forget to organize. Otherwise, it would be a wasteful exercise.

Organize according to color, category, types of item. Clothes, books, and utensils, or anything else should be sorted and stored in an organized manner for easy and quick accessibility.

organize utensils

word of caution

Few points where you need to exercise caution:

  • Do not start with any feeling of guilt or regret. If we start regretting over having so much or the cost of items involved then the momentum breaks. You might end up feeling depressed and doing nothing to solve the problem.
  • Be very careful when dealing with children and there stuff. Remember our aim is to reduce clutter and in no way hamper there growth or development. Explain the benefits and go ahead with their consent only. We don’t want to take the joy out of their childhood.
  • Consider the fact that every person has a different clutter toleration threshold. I have seen some people enjoy being in a messy, chaotic place. Their brain cells work better if surrounded by clutter. Do not force your concepts and give people time.
  • Do not be ruthless or impulsive while throwing stuff. You might end up throwing an important document or an important part of some equipment.
  • Keep the balance between minimalism and maximalism. We do not want to end up with a hotel room with bare essentials. After all it is our personal belongings that adds warmth to our house.
  • Be sensitive when dealing with old people. I remember visiting an old aunt and finding myself in the unbearable clutter, every time I went there. But what we perceive as clutter is the only source of joy for an old person, maybe.
clutter
Photo by Brett Jordan on Unsplash

In India, Diwali is the festival when people clear up their houses of all the clutter in a belief that Goddess Lakshmi visits only those houses that are clean. But ironically we end up buying and getting a lot of stuff home to celebrate Diwali.

benefits of removing clutter

Decluttering opens up spaces and hence promotes peace and calm. Less stuff means more meaningful belongings that gain attention and significance in our lives.

Less dust accumulating on objects and less time and resources going into maintenance and cleaning. Easy flow of positive energy. Less distraction with fewer but quality stuff. The benefits of minimizing are manifold and far-reaching.

At a more significant level, the act of letting go detaches us from our material possessions. In the process, we feel liberated and are driven to donate and help others. We get free of a consumeristic attitude that only driven by greed and hoarding. When we are not controlled by our stuff rather we control it.

I have shifted to my new home after letting go of so much of my stuff. Thanks to the lockdown we have not indulged in any shopping spree till now. And I am enjoying the relatively free space thoroughly.

Hope you got inspired to take up some simplifying of your own homes! If yes do share with others.

Happy decluttering!

Till next time…..

Capture a relaxing, soothing feeling at home with a calming neutral colors palette drawn from nature.

With the changing hues of our circumstances in recent times, melancholy is inevitable. The ruthless and shocking loss of fellow citizens, known or unknown, fills our hearts with deep-seated sorrow.

The shade of these dark times seems never-ending. A sense of vulnerability and insecurity is encompassing many into a state of depression.

Testing times cast a tint of anger in our minds, for the invisible enemy. The horrific tales of helplessness and despair leave us with many unanswered questions.

The clouds in grey tone engulf us and we are forced to doubt our faith and belief. The faith we placed on our system, on humanity, on divinity.

Could things have been better or handled in a more responsible manner? Well without getting into any political debate here, I would rather stick to my job.

However, under the layers of these shades, tints, and tones of the hue of this pandemic lies our response to the current situation. Spaces are evolving and rising up to the challenges posed by the current times.

“Colors must fit together like pieces of puzzle or cogs in a wheel”

Hans Hoffman

The perception of our dwelling spaces has changed. And so have our needs, both physical and emotional. We are spending so much time indoors. Our homes have become our second office spaces, schools, entertainment zones, etc. Well-being and comfort are our top priority now.

COLORS AND WELLBEING

Colors affect our psychology more than anything else. The way we perceive space and perform or enjoy working in it is greatly influenced by the colors.

Apart from being secure, flexible, and spacious, we aspire for spaces that boost our health and well-being. Well-being at both physical and mental levels. After facing so much uncertainty and turmoil, there is a need for relaxed and calming vibes for our abodes.

color psychology

Apart from planning and other considerations, colors can have a huge impact on the way we experience an indoor space. And that is why colors are one of my favorite topics.

PANTONE COLORS FOR THE YEAR 22021

Pantone has announced Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating, as the colors for the year 2021. It describes it as a combination of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.

Pantone colors for year 2021
Pantone colors for year 2021

While bright colors like yellow, orange evoke emotions of hope and cheerfulness, what we need more of right now is a sense of safety. A reassuring color palette that induces feelings of well-being, relaxation, and tranquility.

A RELAXING NATURAL COLOR PALETTE

I believe, a color palette that is rooted in nature can provide us with some solace, even if just at an emotional level. Nature can provide us with the much-needed answers. A palette that is rooted in the five elements of nature.

Being restricted indoors, we all want a connection with the outdoors. A muted, natural palette can establish that connection. We have always got some wonderful solutions to our problems from nature and a natural color palette will give us the reassurance.

The earthen colors of nature have a sense of warmth associated with them. They are soothing and relaxing. Out of all the elements, the earth has the power of grounding our emotions.

SHERWIN WILLIAMS COLOR FOR THE YEAR 2021

Sherwin Williams has recommended Urban Bronze as the color for the year 2021. It recommends a warm neutral- Modern Grey for pairing with Urban Bronze. it describes it as a hue with warmth and comfort that breathes down-to-earth tranquility.

sherwin williams color of year 2021

BENJAMIN MOORE COLOR FOR THE YEAR 2021

Benjamin Moore recommends Aegean Teal as the color of the year 2021. It describes it as an Intriguing, balanced, and deeply soothing color that creates a natural harmony.

A CALMING NEUTRAL COLORs PALETTE

Neutrals have always been popular amongst interior designers and architects. They are the desaturated colors obtained by mixing parent colors with pure black, white, or grey. Basically, the chromatic content of color gets reduced and it becomes muted and soothing, softer to the eyes.

A Biophylliic color palette incorporating the hues of nature can work as a balm to nurture our mind, body, and spirit. Besides, the subtle effect of calming neutral colors helps create a serene, holistic environment.

calming neutral colors

Unassuming, barely their calming neutral colors have always trended on the color palette charts. I would cast my vote for Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore as against Pantone this year. As I feel they respond to our psychological needs more appropriately.

A sophisticated tone-on-tone palette of warm, calming neutral colors works as a warm bear hug. I would prefer neutrals with warm undertones to sterile grays or steel grays. Moreover, neutrals provide us with a background like a blank canvas on which we can paint a picture. Versatile neutrals work well with almost any style.

ADD VISUAL INTEREST TO THE PALETTE

Additionally, pep up the restricted color scheme with some natural textures like natural wood, sisal rugs, rattan furniture, and organic prints, and patterns to keep the interiors from looking sterile and boring. Also, add muted green as an accent color through a feature wall, plants, upholstery, etc for added visual interest.

Going out for a relaxed and cozy dinner evening, a casual conversation with my next-door neighbor over a cup of coffee, hanging out with friends and family, planning a vacation, I have missed out on so much in the last year and a half.

But let us leave behind all the grief and gloom and reinvent and decorate our space with a fresh spirit.

Hoping for the return of good times soon. I hope you enjoyed reading my blog post and it helps you create a serene sanctuary yourself. If yes, do share with your friends.

Now, I must admit that I am not a very camera-friendly person. Nor have I been adept at photography at any point in time. I barely have any grasp of professional photography.

Although I am in the business of interiors that is so much about visual representation more than anything else, I have never gone beyond admiring those engaging, magazine-worthy Instagram photographs and maybe getting inspired by them at the best.

Then why am I discussing Interior photography? Well lately, after starting my blog, I realized how imperative it is to click the pictures on your own. How difficult it is to hunt for good quality, copyright-free images online. The best you can get is from a few stock image sites.

How I wish to had been more organized and heedful to documenting and capturing my previous interior projects. How enriching those precious moments, at the site, would have been for my blog!

But I never considered it earnestly. Maybe one of the reasons is that I have been totally ignorant of the fact that my husband has been clicking photos with his DSLR camera. He has had the responsibility of clicking photos of a project on completion.

He keeps experimenting with his DSLR and honestly I have never paid much attention to the technical terms that he keeps using! So in front of professional gear, a smartphone has never got a chance! But capture those small moments you don’t always have a DSLR with you.

But my sudden desire to learn some fundamentals has surprised me. Oblivious to the wonderful tool that is right there in our hands, 24×7, we tend to take it so lightly. There is so much we can do with our mobile phones apart from just scrolling through Facebook and Whatsapp. All we need is a little understanding and the desire to use it to its full potential.

Mobile photography is surely catching up these days. Of course, It cannot be compared to a DSLR in the picture quality. But consider the convenience of capturing those moments a bit more professionally by understanding a few basics. We can surely do a pretty decent job.

I am so excited to share a few tips that I have learned over the past few weeks. After getting some knowledge from my husband and doing some research and experimentation with my phone camera, this is what I have understood. I hope these tips assist you to take your phone photography to the next level.

CLICK INTERIOR PHOTOS IN NATURAL LIGHT

Instinctively you might think of switching on all the lights of the room before taking a photograph. But this is such a wrong perception. Artificial lights cast unnaturally harsh shadows and distort the colors of the elements in a space. Camera sensors are not as smart as humans eyes.

As much as possible use ONLY natural light. It imparts a soft and natural character to the photograph. And always keep the flash of your phone camera OFF. It casts unwanted glare and a prominent bright spot in the image which is very unpleasant to the eyes.

natural light for interior photography

Wait for that time of the day when the room to be shot receives indirect, diffused, and even light, instead of harsh and direct sunlight. Otherwise, there will be hi-contrast zones within the room. There will be too much variation in the light temperature between dark corners and flushed out brighter areas. In fact a cloudy day is perfect to shoot pictures.

A very common challenge in interior photography is to handle blown-out windows. One way to handle this is to wait for the right time when it receives indirect light. Another way is to set different AE (Auto exposure) and AF (Auto Focus) points in the shot. This can be done in Pro mode only. Adjust AE for the brighter part. The rest of the picture will become a bit dark. It’s is possible to brighten shadows in editing but it is not possible to retrieve the blown-out highlights later. This can be adjusted in post-editing.

To shoot in darker areas you can always use slower shutter speed in Pro mode and use a mobile tripod to avoid the vibrating issues faced during long exposures. Keep ISO ( 100 to 400 max ) as low as possible for sharp image quality.

interior photography

You can use fill-up lights for dark corners. Use external flash, if required, but make the light indirect and diffused by bouncing it from a wall or the ceiling. You can also use softboxes and umbrellas to soften the light. You can also use a reflector like a white sheet to brighten up the subject.

FEW TECHNICAL POINTS TO CLICK INTERIOR PHOTOS

  • Always clean the lens before clicking a picture to remove the fingerprints and dust particles.
  • If not using a tripod, hold the phone with both hands for stability and grip and trigger the volume button to take the shot.
  • Mobile phones do not have the option of setting the aperture. We can only play with the ISO and the shutter speed.
  • Never use digital zoom, use optical zoom or move forward to get a close up shot.
  • Always shoot in RAW mode. JPEG is a compressed format and a lot of data regarding the image is lost. Most smartphones today have the option of shooting in RAW mode. In post-editing, it yields much better results as compared to JPEG. You have more control over your image while editing it as much of the photographic data is preserved in RAW mode. This results in more accurate post-editing.
  • NEVER use those sloppy Instagram-kinda filters. They are so fake and thoughtless reproductions that ruin an image beyond words. I would compare them to those ready-to-eat meals that have no comparison to the homemade soulful meals.
  • You can use Presets though which are used prior to taking an image. We have the option of tweaking them and saving them also.
  • Don’t use night mode or auto HDR mode. It gives very artificial results. Instead use HDR manual mode.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE INTERIOR SHOTS

When it comes to interior photography, shooting from eye level results in a birds-eye kinda view. The viewer is not able to relate to the furniture placed on the floor and sees the tops of the pieces very prominently. The furniture looks a bit out of scale and hilarious.

So always shoot low. Keep your phone at about 40″ from the floor level. Of course one has to decide on the exact height as per each shot and location. Sometimes you might have to go even lower if the subject is low.

Decide on whether you want a wide-angled shot, tight shot, or a macro/close-up shot. Personally, I love the well-styled close-ups of curated vignettes with blurred backgrounds.

Wide-angle

These days smartphones come with a range of lenses including the wide-angle lens. But in case yours doesn’t have one then you can buy the wide-angle lens for the phone separately.

A wide-angled shot can get distorted but we can always handle it in post-processing. A satisfactory way to convey the overall feel, flow, and scale of the space. Really beneficial for real estate photography. Also when you want to narrate the transition between spaces.

Tight angle

A tight-angled shot is also a nice trade-off to portray a well-styled space. It captures details giving a reasonable glimpse of the space at the same time. The sliced views in tighter shots show those curated visual moments and details of a space that wide-angle shots don’t.

Straight on

I personally love the simplistic view of straight-on shots as compared to odd angles. It is like a one-point perspective facing one of the walls straight on. It draws our eyes more profoundly than a regular corner shot.

Somehow it has a very architectural and artistic feel to it. It is like a painting on a canvas and generates a very harmonious feel. It is especially beneficial in case you want to emphasize a feature on the wall.

Vignettes

Next on my favorites list are the close-ups or vignettes that capture the details so well. The layers of decor items tell a story about the space and reflect on the personality of the owner. The thoughtful illustrations of warmth and luxury.

COMPOSITION OF INTERIOR PHOTOS

A photograph is a piece of art and like an artist, you need to compose your shot. Composition is the key to get compelling photographs. There are various techniques and guidelines that one can adopt.

Keep the grid on

Smartphones have various grid options to choose from. The most popular being the 3×3 grid which is also known as the Rule of thirds grid. The most basic approach for beginners to compose a photograph.

Place the points of interest in the shot on the lines or the intersections of the lines, also known as the eyes of the grid.

Photo by Alexandra Gorn on Unsplash

Another option for grids is the Phi Grid or the golden ratio grid. This has a narrower middle row and is useful for a more centered composition and emphasis of an element.

There is an option of using The Golden spiral or Fibonacci sequence but only in post-processing and that too on a PC in software like Lightroom. This can be used as a cropping overlay in post-editing.

Again the aim is to compose in accordance to the spiral with the point of interest at the end of the the spiral.

Light-room provides various grid options including diagonals. You can also use import your own grid overlays like the more advanced dynamic grids and crop the images accordingly.

The basic idea is to align our composition in a way that the lines and elements of emphasis get locked with this grid or are in tune with the grid in some way.

Leading lines

Some spaces have very prominent architectural lines or elements leading in a direction. These lines are very supportive in drawing the eyes and emphasizing the element of interest in a shot. Always look for such lines and compose the shot accordingly.

Frame it up

This is very nice technique to frame up the shot with some element in the foreground. It elevates the picture and gives it a very artistic, well composed feel.

frame in frame

Context

Sometimes it is a good idea to include an exterior view in the shot. It sets the context of the image and portrays the character of its location without distracting from the interiors.

context

Balance and Symmetry

We always tend to look for symmetry for balance and harmony. But sometimes it is about balance without symmetry, You should ensure that the right and left sides of the frame are well balanced to avoid any negative spaces.

Like the chairs and the painting on the right balance the visual weight of the bed on the left. You might have to move the furniture around to fill the frame.

open window curtain in room

Depth

Pay attention to the foreground, middle ground, and background. What is your point of emphasis? Keep that in focus and remove the distractions from the other planes. Your eyes should land on what you want to emphasize.

depth

STYLE UP THE INTERIOR PHOTOS

Style up the framed area for that oomph and glamour. To make your photo from ordinary to magazine-worthy, you need to do some styling. Add some books, plants, a crumpled throw, some personal touch, and set it up for the shot.

Professional stylists take hours to style a shot and work in collaboration with the photographer. But we can do a decent job ourselves too. Just get rid of any clutter, those chords, and cables, trash bins, towels, etc. Layer in the accessories and textures meticulously.

style up
Photo by Christian Mackie on Unsplash

But be careful not to overdo it to the level that it appears fake and pretentious. It has to appear inhabited and lived in. The viewer should be drawn in and wish to own such a space rather than get intimidated.

POST EDITING

There are a number of editing apps like Snapseed, Lightroom, and Photoshop Express. Of course, they are basic and are not as feature-rich as software like Lightroom or Photoshop but we can do a decent job with them on our phones.

These were just a few observations or guidelines that can help us unlock the secret science behind those stunning Interior photographs we keep admiring. I hope to implement them and improve my photography skills in the future.

Sometimes one approach is more suitable for a situation than another. Or we need to adopt a hybrid of these guidelines to click a particular shot. These pictures can serve as a tool to aid in our designing process too. How helpful it would be to accessorize an area on thoughtfully analysing and composing it in a picture.

I hope it was helpful and if yes do share with others! Thanks for reading!

Till next time….

Happy Shooting!!!
